The campout committee has selected Sunday, May 4th as the cache hiding day for the upcoming WGA Geo-Campout. Here are the details:

    Date: Sunday, May 4th
Time: Starting at 9am (volunteers can arrive any time after 9 but before 3pm)
Location: Cox Hollow Beach Shelter in Governor Dodge SP (N 43 00.870 W090 06.377)

We do not officially have this shelter reserved, so if it is in use we’ll have to set up elsewhere in the park, possibly the Enee Point shelter.

A number of campout committee members have already indicated they will be there on cache hiding day, but we could definitely use more volunteers. We would love to see a strong showing of volunteers from “local” geocachers in the SW part of the state. Ideally we’d like to have between 6 and 10 people helping hide caches. Each person hides around 5 or 6 temp caches. Some hide more, some hide less. There are plenty of excellent locations for temporary caches at Governor Dodge, and with 5,270 acres we aren’t going to run out of real estate!

Post here or contact me (or any campout committee member) if you’d like to help on May 4th. Note that if you cannot make the cache hiding day but still want to hide some temporary caches, please contact me to make alternate arrangements. If you are able to place your caches or at a minimum select locations before about May 10th we may be able to accommodate you.

What happens on cache hiding day? The WGA provides temporary cache containers, stamps, and handouts. Volunteers provide their creative cache ideas, and unique containers if you so desire. The format of cache hiding day is usually as follows:

    – Volunteers meet at the determined date/time/location.
    – You’ll receive maps and informational materials, and pages to record your cache information on.
    – WGA has a nice selection of temp cache containers with stamps. Grab the ones you plan to use.
    – Everyone picks a portion of the park where they will focus their hides. This helps spread everyone out.
    – Caches may be hidden that day, or at minimum, the coordinates need to be recorded. Some people with special containers will select the location, but not put the cache out until the campout.
    – Cache information will be turned back into the cache coordinator who will record the cache info into the computer. This will help identify any problems before we go to press with the handouts.
    – Stay as long as you want.
    – Have fun!

If …. temp caches are no longer going to be log-a-ble at the WGA events …. perhaps those attending will spend more time visiting?

    Actually Marc
I factor the cost of gas to travel there, the cost to camp there .. if we can not log the temp caches .. then there would need to be other caches in the area we could go to .. meaning we will now be LEAVING the park to do so .. or, it is not worth the travel costs in our budget.

    I’ll be there!

If anyone want to meet up somewhere and carpool — that would be a great way to save a little bit on gas!

Regarding whether it’s “worth it” to go to camping and get out into nature, even if I can’t log dozens of finds on a web site for my efforts,

The tree the tempest with a crash of wood
Throws down in front of us is not bar
Our passage to our journey’s end for good,
But just to ask us who we think we are

Insisting always on our own way so.
She likes to halt us in our runner tracks,
And make us get down in a foot of snow
Debating what to do without an ax.

And yet she knows obstruction is in vain:
We will not be put off the final goal
We have it hidden in us to attain,
Not though we have to seize earth by the pole

And, tired of aimless circling in one place,
Steer straight off after something into space.

I’m there for the camaraderie….don’t really care about the caches!! Temps or perms…ok…. maybe an earthcache LOL I do enjoy hiding temps for those who hunt them. 🙂 Otherwise…..I just like getting away with good friends who have a common interest and listening to all the stories!! Sure, it costs a few bucks, but friendships and memories are pricelss!!!

    {Would like to commit to hiding, but not sure if I need to be up Nord with Mom, working on the Vacation Hutch. Hope to know soon!}

We’re going to try and make it over for the hiding – I’m not really experienced at hiding, so might want to tag along with somebody else.

    Bump.

It is not too late to help with cache hiding for the campout. It looks like the weather on Sunday is going to be great so you can’t use that as an excuse not to participate! Feel free to stop by and lend a hand with cache placements (or just to say hi)… someone should be at the park until at least 5pm.

Hey all, temp hiding day is tommorrow. If you are willing to help, PLEASE let us know. The success of WGA events and projects are dependent on your involvement.

At this point, it appears we have the same 4 or 5 people who have carried the load for the last several events. It would be real nice to see some new blood involved.

    Thanks a lot.

I’m hoping to make it to help hide caches, but its still tentative. No way I can be there by nine am, but hopefully before noon.

Hey, that sounds great!!!! Thanks for offering to help. See ya tommorrow. (I will be the overweight, middle aged guy with a big smile and a cute redhead following behind me–the redhead will be my Golden Retriver, Jesse.)
