I have been using cachemate on my Palm (Tungsten E2) PDA for over a year now. Occasionally I have had problems but they seemed to go away.
Recently (2 weeks ago) I was no longer able to download the PQ’s to my PDA. I sent several e-mails back and forth to Cachemate and we came to the conclusion that I needed to delete the cachemate software from my PDA and start over. All worked well until… tonight and I can no longer communicate from my PDA to computer again. I DON’T want to keep deleting the software every time I need to download or update my PQ’s to my PDA.
Any suggestions???Should I use another software? If so what else is available? How well does the other software work?
Thanks for any help or information you can provide.
EDIT
One hour later: After several futile download attempts I restarted my computer, took a shower, and returned to the “scene of the crime.” Two more asttempts and I had SUCCESS! I am still wondering about other software and weather others have occassional trouble downloading to their PDA. Thanks.08/27/2007 at 3:31 am #1878402I’ve been using Cachmate on a Tungsten E2 also, for about 4-5 months. Have not had any issues like you describe. I have used the software on two different computers. Only issue was dropping it in a lake 🙁 , but even after 30 minutes in the lake, it was revived (after a couple days drying out, opened up and diassembled into about 10 pieces). And, everything was still there! Display not quite as bright as it once was.
Let me know if you find anything out, so I can plan for the future.
08/27/2007 at 11:45 am #1878403I’ve been using a Tungsten E2 for a year with zero problems. I wonder if your palm is the thing actually going buggy not the software.
08/27/2007 at 2:09 pm #1878404I have had something similar happening with my Zire, but my problem is actually getting the computer to “see” my palm. I keep having to restart my computer to get the computer to tell when the palm is connected. It is a PITA but I have been coping. I only use it for cachemate so no big deal.
On a related note, I had been using an OLD IIIxe which worked awesome, until all of a sudden my computer couldn’t sense that it was there. It was a serial connection and I tried everything I could think of before giving up and switching to the Zire. Would still love to get the old IIIxe working if anyone has any suggestions.

Yes, exactly as you describe.
Mine works 95% of the time without a glitch, but sometimes it just wont load no matter what….It does seem that if I throw some incense into the air, dance around the computer 7 times, shut everything down and start over, pray to the goddess, and shout 3 times “Signal The Frog,” it usually works.
This would be my suggestion to solve your problem, since it has seemed to work for me.

08/27/2007 at 3:35 pm #1878406I’ve been using CacheMate with BOTH a E2 and a Zire 31 for about 2 years now … NEVER had the problems you pointed out. I typically download to my CacheMate 2 to 4 times a month, so I would think I would have had these problems by now.
Lack of communications between your Palm and Desktop Computer, would seem to be more of a hardware problem or a non-CacheMate problem. As I doubt that the copy of CacheMate on your Palm could some how cause I a sync to not work.
Now, on the other hand once the sync is done … that’s different … I have occassionally had lockups when I then open CacheMate to let the synced cache file open up in CacheMate. The biggest thing I do to avoid this is, EVERY TIME BEFORE I start the Sync process, I first hit the reset button on the back of my Palms … then I sync knowing my Palms have a fresh start on life. MOST of the time this keeps things running smoothly, by maybe one or twice a year something still goes wrong.
08/27/2007 at 5:23 pm #1878407Thanks for all of the replies!
On an investigative note- Palm says that third party software can sometimes cause these problems.
ZUMA: I will try the dance. You may have to show me the steps however. 😆
Energy Saver: I think that resetting the PALM before each sync is a good idea and I will try to remember to do that. It seems logical and hopefully that will help. Thanks again.

That’s the ticket!
I have successfully downloaded twice w/o errors now because I “RESET” before I performed the “sync.” THANK YOU THANK YOU!
I just hope that it keeps working this way. 🙄
09/04/2007 at 3:59 pm #1878409Glad it works!
I might be excessive (actually, I am) … but I always do Two resets … one before syncing and one after syncing … I consider syncing a “major strain” on a Palm, so I also think it’s good to give it the helping hand.
This is my complete procedure:
– Reset
– Sync
– Let the synced caches into CacheMate
– Reset
– Copy CacheMate and data to my Palm’s memory card
– Beam CacheMate data to my daughter’s Palm (only when we go on major outings far from home, as a backup to my backup)My theory … at an moment my Palm could “lock up” and loose all the CacheMate files … it has only happened once (luckily I was at home) … so I insurance myself by Resetting twice, backing up to the memory card and in some cases beaming to the 2nd Palm. In my case this might be more of an issue for me that for some other users, as I load some pretty heavy duty bible software on my Palm (“QuickVerse” with 4 text versions tying up 12mb of my 16mb), so I suspect having the memory so full is part of my issue.
09/06/2007 at 12:52 am #1878410Being new to all this, My first experience had me trying to sync with outlook instead of sync manager.
09/06/2007 at 4:40 pm #1878411Actually … with regard to CacheMate … you don’t even technically need to open the Palm Sync Manager …
1. You open the GPX file using CacheMate’s “converter” software on your desktop or laptop computer … Select All Records … under File you use Export to a Palm file (or something like that, as I don’t have the software with me right now).
2. This creates a file to upload to your Palm … but you don’t even really care where the file is stored on your computer or what it’s called.
3. Plug in your Palm, click the Sync button ON the Palm (no need to open anything on your desktop/laptop) … it will then Sync up your Palm, including the file your created in step 1 (it just knows it needs Syncing, you don’t even need to select the file any where).
4. Then open CacheMate on your Palm and allow it to merge in the Synced CacheMate database.
Note: Not everyone does things the same way, but I delete the prior file out of my CacheMate just before doing the above steps, so that I’m always starting with a clean/fresh database. I know you don’t have to do it that way, but I do.
