I have been in the process of taking all caches out within a year and replacing the ones I archive with new ones in the same general area where the caches have been successful. I think this will cut down the the impact to the area and allow showing off other places where the cacher may not have been on their visit to previous ones.
While this is a voluntary action I really believe more cache owners should consider this as something to be implement.
Most people will cache in a very small geographic range and will be limited to the ones nearby. This will help keep them active and not require long trips to find new caches.
Example of those I have changed:
Coyote Cache (archived) and replaced by Rockport Run-around
Owl be Right Back Too (archived) and replaced by Wisconsin Time Trial 2004 (which by the way no cacher has beaten yet)
Storrs Story (will be archived this week) and replaced by Hiking Boots.
The Ears Hears (archived) and replaced by Currency Exchange.
All of the new caches offer something different than the originals which makes this a worthwhile venture I think.[This message has been edited by wzbt03 (edited 02-18-2004).]
02/20/2004 at 3:44 am #1746370Just a thought..
Wouldn’t it just be good to relocate the same cache (with same name, same waypoint) to a fresh area within 500′ of where it was? I was all excited about seeing new parks/trails etc when those new ones popped up.. it just seems then that I’ll be going through DeJa Vu around the area. I know alot do not like driving but isn’t that half the experience of caching is going somewhere new?

02/20/2004 at 8:10 am #1746371Under the line of thought that a cache in the same area that is different from the one being archived should not be a new cache seems wrong. If the cache is exactly the same such as a here are the coords, find it in the same basic area, I would agree. However if the new cache shows you a different part of the area such as all the caches in the Kettle Moraine area or offers a different type of challenge then it should be a different cache.
Most people do not scour the state for caches and prefer to do ones near and this type of turnover of caches would seem to appeal to them.02/20/2004 at 7:53 pm #1746372Don’t get me wrong (smiles) I love your caches.. Your The Spice of Life was one of my favorites.. I’ll enjoy returning to the same parks only because of your talented hides and ideas.. You are the sole person that brought your area to our geo-maps in such a varied way.

02/20/2004 at 10:03 pm #1746373No offense taken young lady. I am just trying to keep the interest high in this area with limited hiding spots. I am getting to the point where long drives to specific areas are needed to keep finding caches and was thinking of ways to keep those who did not share my insanity active.
I will await The Lil Otter log on Wisconsin Time Trial 2004 in the future. -
