    Greetings all,

I am working on getting my first cache placed and started to think about what to name it. I wanted to search hidden caches by name at geocaching.com, but can’t seem to find a way to do this. Can you search by cache name anywhere?

    Thanks for your help!

On the Hide and Seek a Cache page, you can search by cache name by putting your terms in the “By keyword:” field.

    Awesome, that worked out great!

    Thanks!!

One other tip… While you want to avoid duplicate names in the immediate area, don’t worry about duplicates more than 100 miles away, even if they are in Wisconsin. There are two caches called “The Island”, one near Delafield and one near Wausau, and I don’t believe anyone is confused by this.

On the other hand, be very careful to avoid names similar to those of caches that are very close. Example: If you are placing a cache in Mukwonago, don’t name your cache Place of a Bear, which is technically different from the nearby Place of the “Bear”, an existing area cache. Many people use software which strips out the “a”s, “of”s, “the”s, etc. from the name, so this will confuse some people.

Thanks for the tip; I understand exactly what you mean. I appreciate your help. I was able to do a search on one of the words that I wanted to use in my cache and it brought up all cache names with that word in it. I guess one nice feature would be to sort the search results further by state. Regardless, it did the trick nicely.

This feature has been requested more than once, but it continues to fall on deaf ears at Groundspeak. *sigh*

Yeah, and how about not having to get the spelling EXACTLY correct in a search?!?!? I’m admitedly one of the worlds worst spellers, and get frustrated when I have to figure out exact spellings.

For instance There is a cache in Milwaukee called SSSSSSlither to the Totem Pole. I’m suposed to know how many S’s are there? I still don’t.

Sorry, I got a little off topic. Guess I should put this in the suggestion box huh?

You just need to search for the right terms. It’s result #3…

I feel as someone completely new to this sport/hobby that the amount of information available through geocaching.com is awesome. The tracking capabilities and level of detail that you are able to have access to, the mapping and downloading of way points is just incredible. I imagine it won’t be long before they add another feature or two which may include upgraded search capabilities.

Thanks Dave. I was going about it all wrong… Typing in Slither, SSlither, SSSlither and so on. DOH!! 😳
