Cache replacement

I know I try to rehide caches as I found them, but if it was apparent that the last cacher was careless I put it back the way it should be.

I have found after a certain cacher found some of mine they screwed up my cache for the everyone after them. The problem is that I can’t prove 100% that it was this cacher. What should I do?

Send them a polite little note stating you found the cache out of place after they found it and that you hope it didn’t wreck the experience for them.

Doesn’t blame them, blames some “unknown” cacher. Probably won’t work, but you might feel better. 😈

Proving it does nothing Edward. I’ve had them go missing and others replaced horribly different than they were hid. Just politely ask them a few questions and then move on and do as I do- Whine to your family about “those cachers” and when you get no farther or get sympathy, move on.

I’ve had problems with squirrels moving my caches, but they just dont’ seem to listen. Maybe squirrels are causing your problems?

I can understand this one fully! What is worse than ppl not rehiding them as they find them is when ppl take them completely and think its funny. That is what happened on one particular stretch of road on the Battle Ship Series up here. Needless to say, the grid went KaBOOM completely!

Try black bears. There was one particular cache up north that was constantly getting attacked by bears. The bears finally won… (GC101JE)

I’ve had some new caches on the HAST trail migrate in the GZ area… haven’t had a chance to check on the caches yet though based on the logs and 1 or 2 DNFs I know they’ve been carelessly replaced. I guess it sometimes happens. I’ll be taking a walk soon to recheck the placements.

As a new cacher I worry about this ALL THE TIME.

I do my best to put things back as I found them though. If it were me (and I hope it’s not lol) I would WANT somebody to tell me I wasn’t replacing them well. I would look at it as a learning experience and may even ask questions so long as I wasn’t approached with a snarky attitude.

Welcome and thank you! I have often found caches on the ground, I’ll state so in the log and let the owner know “I used the principle of gravity and put it back were I thought it might have been.” I’ve sent a pm to a finder on a cache of mine that hasn’t been found in a while and inquire on it’s condition and been pleasantly rewarded with nice reports. A little bit or courtesy by all of us makes the game fun.

I generally don’t state in my log when I “move” a cache to where I believe it should be. I do send a PM to the CO though to give them the details. The reason I don’t put it in the log is to avoid “spoilers” for the next person looking.

One of the issues that I have had in the past with it “walking” is that it is wheelchair accessible. It is under a bush in a planter, but many people feel that they need to place it back in the MIDDLE of the bush. There is no way in the world that a person in a wheelchair could ever reach it, let alone probably see it.

We have very few true wheelchair capable caches out there. We do have many that have a terrain of 1 that should be 1.5. 🙂

Interesting thought, never considered it that way. I remember one cache in general that I would check back on after I found it and it was always on the ground and people always stated so in their log and then replaced it. I came to believe that it was blocking a critter hole and he kept moving it off his front porch…

Must be due to the fact that I personally cache only with the coordinates on my GPS unit. No spoilers to look at during and no looking before hand.

There’s one that I help with as “trail boss” and it’s supposed to be on the ground. People continually move this one “up” assuming it belongs there. Up means D=1 and Down means D=3. In this case it makes a big difference as to how the cache is “supposed” to be and it’s interesting how periodically someone states in their log “Must have fallen so I replaced it higher”.
