I was just wondering if there could be a way to alert people when new Cache Rescues are added. I don’t check that page often, and I see that there was a new one added in the Green Bay area.
Just a suggestion. I don’t know exactly how it would happen.
12/11/2008 at 3:16 pm #1898861maybe another profile|notification option for cache rescue additions could be added to the site?
Just an idea, I have no clue on how much work that might be.

12/11/2008 at 5:32 pm #1898862I really do not see what that would serve. Look at the list – no one is ‘rescuing’ them anyways.
12/11/2008 at 5:49 pm #1898863Do you think a bookmark listing would work? Does anyone really use the Bookmark Lists section?

That is my point marc. Maybe more people would rescue caches, if they were aware when new missions were posted.
12/11/2008 at 8:16 pm #1898865First of all, I don’t agree with Marc on this at all–people do rescue these things, it just depends on the area. The bulk of the caches still on the list are from the past few months. Only the farthest-flung ones are old. You’ll note the ones in the Fox Valley don’t last long. The Green Bay one just recently showed up and I’m sure it will be visited soon. (Actually I submitted that one but have not gotten there yet.)
Second, I agree with Cachelovskys regarding the problems with the visibility of this effort. It wasn’t until we were in the game for quite some time that we stumbled across this feature. It is incumbent on people to frequent the WGA pages and know something about this link.
I realize the weekly notification email comes from groundspeak, but some sort of a “push” mechanism like that is really needed on this effort.

I do not think so ………
12/15/2008 at 11:56 pm #1898867Incorporating them into the Lonely Cache Game so they are more visible and worth more points will certainly help put these missions in a brighter light. I also agree that it is incumbent upon individuals to get to know the Rescue Mission page. Rescues can be placed for any number of reasons and don’t have to be placed only on archived caches that need to be removed.
If you think you have a cache in trouble and are out of town or out of the state, just submit a mission to have someone check on it and repair anything that needs fixing. All I even see are “Verify Missing and Recover” missions, even though many other types of missions are possible.
Seems to me a great tool to maintain caches when you just can’t find the time to get there yourself. In fact, I may submit a few of my own on some caches that need a check-up…
12/16/2008 at 2:03 am #1898868I agree with what s/s has stated. I check the list about twice a month now, and if I will be near one, I check it out. A few of the oldest ones currently on the list are probably geotrash and getting extra points in the LCG would help a few “adventurers” clean up the site.
Perhaps a Cache Rescue that is pending more than 6 monthes could be a “wild card”, and be used in any of the next 2 monthes following the mission. The Rescuer would get to use it that month or defer to the next month for the points, up to 2 monthes ahead. So a Rescue done in October could be used in October, November, or December. (I don’t know about you, but that term “wild card” always gets my heart pumping!). So you could essentially “bank” Cache Rescues to be used at the end of a month.
Interesting twist? Or too confusing? ❓
12/16/2008 at 8:47 pm #1898869Two questions.
Question the first: I’ve seen instances of caches that were archived by the owners after some DNFs or whatnot because they basically assumed the cache was MIA but didn’t go check, but the cache or parts of it are actually still there (and sometimes subsequently found). There doesn’t seem to be a way around this (other than owner responsibility)–i.e., to move them to the cache rescue list automatically, which would be an administrative headache given how many caches are archived over time. Is there a solution? (Or, is this not a problem?)
Question the second: What is the procedure for moving reviewer-archived caches to the Cache Rescue list?
On the Left Side of the Road...12/17/2008 at 7:31 pm #1898870First answer: If an owner is active enough to archive their own listing, we assume they will pick up their own trash. I realize that not everyone who takes this step is going to be responsible, but I’m not willing to insult the 95% of the owners who are responsible to cater to the 5% who are not. So, if you find a cache that should not be there, post it to the CR page and it will be added (or just throw it away, but be sure it isn’t listed on another listing service first.)
Second answer: If the logs indicate the cache is still there, it is added to the list. Usually it is clearcut. If the cache was down for various maintenance reasons, such as a broken container or a wet log, it hits the CR list. If the cache was disabled because there were 40 DNFs in a row, it doesn’t. Not perfect, but it is what we do.
