So I have tried EVERYTHING to resolve my issue with Cachemate not working with my Palm because of Vista. I can’t go back to paper 😕 no way. What does everyone else use for paperless? Is there a better system than Cachemate/Palm. What sort of PDA’s do you all use and then the program that goes with it. I currently have GSAK which I export a file to Cachemate and put it in my Zire 31. I also wondered if there is an other program besides Cachemate that works with Vista for a Palm that I am not aware of. It was soooo easy before. Now with the vista – nothing 👿 Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated as I am leaving for a trip next week and would really like to have this up and running even if I have to go out and buy a new PDA.

I moved this to the Help forum.

Let me guess… it either is failing when it goes to install the .pdb (CacheMate database) file using the Palm Quick Install tool or it is failing during the HotSync operation? If this is the case, switching to a different Palm program while still using the Zire 31 would not help. Though if you have the money to buy a fancy new Palm, you could get CacheMate (and everything else) to work.

Have you tried the 6.2 version of Palm Desktop? The Zire is technically not supported but it may be new enough that it works:

Your other option is to go back to an older version of Palm Desktop and use something like this to install the CacheMate file:

      http://www.palminfocenter.com/news/9321/simple-installer-released-for-vista/

(this assumes the Quick Install is the problem, and the HotSync is working)

Does anyone out there have an older Palm syncing successfully with a Vista PC? I use an ancient TRGpro (Palm III style) Palm so I think I’m going to avoid running Vista at home as long as possible…

I forgot the Zire 31 has a memory card slot. You can totally skip the whole install and HotSync steps and install the CacheMate database file using the memory card. You just copy the .pdb file created by GSAK to the card. Kind of inconvenient, but it should work.

WOW, thanks for the info Jeremy. I can’t even get the crummy PDA now to hotsync, not sure what is screwed up on that. It gets stuck on the synchronizing window and won’t go anywhere. I reinstalled the original CD to see if that helped, no luck. Frustrated… I would try the memory card thing, but I can’t even get the hotsync to work.

If you happen to have a Garmin Nuvi for in car navigation you can skip the palm all together. I went to an event in Tennessee and someone there showed me this program and it works with Vista. It loads the cache pages directly onto your Nuvi. Here is the website that explains how to do it. It took me about 30 minutes to load all of the programs on my laptop and get the actual info onto my Nuvi. Now that the programs are on there it only takes about 2 minutes to load it all in. It was great timing for me because my Palm decided to die while I was gone. I would suggest that anyone who has a Nuvi check this out: True Paperless Geocaching

It took me a bit of looking but I finally had found the patch I needed to get my cachemate to work with my Vista. It didn’t google out and I can’t remember if I found it in forums, rather just came across it. Let me do some research and see if I can come up with it again. It wasn’t obvious, but it worked!! 😀

Holy crud! It works! I honestly have NO IDEA what I did, I just reloaded my Palm software like 6 times and then one last time decided to update it with a PDA414 patch from Palm and now it works with Cachemate! I feel like I won the lottery! 😀 Thanks everyone for your suggestions and help! ❗ ❗ ❗

Sweet! I hope it keeps working for you (don’t touch ANYTHING :)).

What was this patch you applied? Maybe if it is something you got off the Internet you can post a link to it? I did not see a patch for Palm Desktop 4.14 on the page Da Fu posted. Fu, are you using Palm Desktop 4.14 or the newer 6.2?

If you use a memory card to transfer the CacheMate .pdb file to the Palm, you don’t need to have syncing working or even have the Palm Desktop software installed. You simply copy the file created by GSAK to the memory card. (Of course you need a memory card reader to be able to do this…)

I will have to try this too. With the research I did, I found out, via Palm, that Vista does NOT support pdb files so it can’t be loaded onto the Palm. I have a Tungsten E2
