One of the key members of my geocaching group back in PA (Quest Master zip code 15431) was banished for a month by Groundspeak – no he is not all squeaky clean his last event was Burning Micro II (no actual caches where harm in the making of the event). But he has been know to smash a mirco and brag about it, even if he later replaced, and has made and poked fun at micros (see his alter ego, Appenge Master) Following is his notification to our group of his banishment:
I have been issued a one month appengement from Groundspeak for
writing silly poems, hiding a lame cache on purpose, making micros
bigger than what they’re supposed to be, and the senseless slaughter
of film canisters. I have requested that all of my caches be
disabled during this period of appengement because I will be pulling
some of them for routine maintenance and I can’t do anything with the
cache pages. In the meanwhile, I can still cache because I have an
extensive offline database and so far I’m still getting my PQ’s and
emails. In other words, I’m not affected by the banishment as much
as you are. If you want to hunt any of my caches, please check with
me first to be sure that it’s still in place. If you have a problem
with this, please take it up with Groundspeak:Bryan Roth

09/12/2006 at 10:57 am #1765511Groundspeak ussaly does not banish anyone right off the bat unless it is a serious violation. So, I would say Groundspeak has noted several violations and unruly behavior and even gave him notification. I highly doubt that Groundspeak personnel got up one morning and said lets kick someone off today. In short, I bet he had it coming.
My View
09/12/2006 at 12:54 pm #1765512This isn’t the first time I have heard of this happening, I really don’t want to get into this in any more detail because I don’t want any of the flak coming my way. This is the reason that terracaching evolved(even though in my opinion their sponsorship to be a member is the lamest thing ever, I’ve had my sponsor ship revoked more than once for not being active, which in turn revokes the people I have sponsored)
This sucks for your friend, but there’s not much that can be done about it.
09/12/2006 at 2:38 pm #1765513Unsportsman like conduct….gotta keep on it. Wouldn’t get away with it in other sports… why THIS one??!!??!!
I know some people think this is a “hobby”, but I see it more as a sport, so why ruin it for eveyone else. What kind of example does it show the kids involved in Caching and THAT’s what I always come back to. It’s not all adults playing this game….kids do too and we KNOW how influencial they are.
09/12/2006 at 3:14 pm #1765514I say that Groundspeak was right in shutting him down … if for no other reason than if he’s going around smashing micros (even if he replaces them), he’s messing with someone else’s geo-property … this makes him a vandal and/or muggler, thus not “playing by the rules” of the hobby/sport.
(The above is my “two cents”, since you asked.)
09/12/2006 at 7:12 pm #1765515I guess I trully don’t know to much about the whole situation, however, if he had smashed one of my caches, I suppose I would want him punished in some way. Say 10 lashes in the public square. 8)
09/12/2006 at 11:27 pm #1765516I Should note QM was not banished for destroying a cache that was Back in April of 2004 TB6C95 Check the April 17, 2004 log, on April 22, 2004 he destroyed his own cache (the cache was place to make fun of the other cache)
