caches along route combinations?

i tried to make caches along the route i am taking for vacation. but the google earth wouldn’t route it the way i wanted to go. so i had to make a bunch of little chunks. is there any way to put the chunks together into one route? i can do it by combining the pq’s, but i’d like to post that route on gc for any others going that way. it is mostly on hwy 49 from berlin to antigo.

Yes you can. If you open up the file in a text editor, you’ll see all the Google Earth XML tags. Ignore all the stuff at the top and find the section at the end. If you look at all your KML files in order, you’ll notice that the last coordinate for one file os the same as the first coordinate for the next file.

Copy everything between the tags from the second file (but not the tags themselves) and paste it after all the coordinates in the first file, deleting the duplicate tags I mentioned above.

Open your third file and repeat the process.

Ignore all the other XML tags in the file. When you upload them to GC.com, they are all ignored except for the name of the route, but you can change that after the upload.

I just tried this feature out. I used Garmin Mapsource Roads and Rec and the route tool there to plot my route. I then saved it off as a .GPX file and it worked great.

1st attempt: Started from home (Picked up a bazillion caches right by home) Better to start your route farther out of town.

2nd attempt: Kept the “distance from route” distance at 0.5 miles. This worked, but didn’t return very many caches.

3rd attempt: Same as 2nd attempt, but increased the distance to 1.5 miles. Remember… 3rd time’s a charm!

If you have Delorme’s Street Atlas you can use that to create your route file. Just create a route as usual, using via points to be sure it uses the roads you want. Save the route file (may have to install advanced file features if you have a typical install) and upload that into Geocaching.com. That’s how I got Madison to La Crossevia hwy 14 instead of interstate, which is how GoogleEarth would route it.

Remember though… I don’t think you can upload a route of more than 500 miles, so you might have to break that up into smaller routes.
