I know cooking/food is on a familys own. But how many campfire rings are on a group site normally we just cook over open flame? Or should we plan on bringing a Colman stove along too? And while im asking about campfires what do we do about firewood besides buy it onsite do people normally bring wood with them from home?

Pretty sure they will require you to buy wood there. There is no carry ins of wood allowed at any state park these days due to those pesky elm eating bugs….
04/15/2007 at 2:12 am #1873217I believe there is one big fire ring per group site. The WGA will usually have a fire going both evenings. I know last year you couldn’t bring in out-of-state wood, did they further tighten this restriction I wonder?
I don’t believe we are planning on having fire in the morning, so having a stove along would probably be a good idea.

Thanks for the clarification…I have been to several other campgrounds which flat out refuse to let you bring in your own wood…I have also been denied in state owned parks as well….nice to see what the policy really is.
04/15/2007 at 5:16 pm #1873220Thanks for the info. I guess i’ll have to check our distance from Hartman creek and make sure to pack a campstove.
04/16/2007 at 2:06 am #1873221There also is a spot on that website to choose the state park you are staying at it will map out a 50 mile radius!!!
05/14/2007 at 8:35 pm #1873222For anyone interested in local firewood, my father and brother just happen to sell wood in the campground all the time and will even deliver to your site. Send me a PM if interested, or call Jay at Woodlot Management, 715-258-6192.
BTW, I am not trying to advertise, simply provide a connection to some local wood that meets the guidelines required by WDNR.
See everyone at the campout!
Sara05/14/2007 at 9:15 pm #1873223The WGA has ordered a face-cord and FU is bringing it to the group sites.
It was purchased locally. We’ll have plenty at group camp.** edit: this wood is for the group sites **
05/15/2007 at 5:24 am #1873224Has anyone checked to see if campfires are allowed? Some areas of WI had a ban on open fires a few weeks back I believe.

There is currently no ban. The fire danger has gone down from the Extreme level to High… and it will probably drop further because the area is getting rain right now and likely tomorrow and maybe Wednesday.

Considering the nightly campfire has pretty much been a non-event, I’m shocked to hear so much wood has been purchased.
A face cord is four feet high and eight feet long. A face cord of hardwood is going for well over $100. Sure you have enough? 😕
05/17/2007 at 3:04 am #1873227No you can never have enough firewood Just you cachers wait till this winter for our Meet N Greet Last winter we burned 60 pallets in a little over 6 hours I plan on buring atleast 100 for our meet in greet!!

Russ, the past two campouts have had other factors interfere with the social aspects of the campfire. At Wissota, there were multiple fire rings around the group campsites which prompted people to have their own fire. At Peninsula, it was just too darned unpleasant out that night and the check-in area (where a number of people were socializing) was nowhere near the group of campers. On Sat night, people gathered at the fire at the shelter.
The last time we were at Hartman (2004) we had a large group of people around the one fire – probably because we were all freezing to death, but at least we were very social. I’m hoping it won’t be as cold as 2004, or as miserable as Peninsula.
I’m looking forward to a repeat of our last visit to Hartman – without the frost on my tent, of course.
05/18/2007 at 1:42 am #1873229Fire is good. Big fire is real good…..Zuma like fire. uggg. Grunt. Manly man like fire!!!!!!!
(Everyone should plan to warm their bones and tell tall tales around the fire both Friday and Saturday night.)
