Yay – I can come this year! I know the group sites have been reserved but I’m wondering about those of us with campers and such. Are they allowed in the group sites? At most parks they are not, but I seem to remember an exception here – but I’m not finding anything about it on the website.
So should I be reserving a family campsite now or should I wait because I will be able to use the group site?
01/06/2009 at 4:33 am #1899504Ah. I see I missed Jeremy’s info about it in another spot.

We do have the ability to accommodate a limited number of wheeled camping units (pop ups, travel trailers) on the large group sites this year. If this interests you, please contact Jeremy (jvechinski) so we can get a count for planning purposes; alternatively, the family campground in the park will be open in May and many sites are still available.
So they next question would be: are there any kind of hook-ups at the group sites or would those of us on wheels expect to be dry camping? I assume the latter, but thought I would ask.
01/06/2009 at 6:19 pm #1899505So far, only 1 (now 2) folks have contacted me about campers in the group campsites. I think last time we were there we had maybe 3 or 4 campers of the small travel trailer / pop-up variety.

No water and no electrical hook ups. You can’t use a generator but you can use the lovely pit toilets. The group campsites are basically large grassy fields that need to accommodate all the tents and cars (there are no parking lots) plus any trailers we allow.
So if anyone else is inclined to bring a camper into the WGA group campsites instead of getting a spot in the family campground (to rough it with the unwashed masses… unwashed because there are no showers in the group sites either :)), please let me know. There is still a third group campsite available that the WGA could reserve if we think we are going to have a large number of campers.
01/06/2009 at 7:02 pm #1899506The availability in the “Family sites” are all Non-electric, non-water sites anyway. The only thing you “really” gain by going with a family site is your by a shower building, correct? And you may have a nice landing pad for your pop-up which I assume isn’t the case for the group sites. And it looks like you might gain your own personal fire pit?
My family also has a pop-up trailer camper. Not sure about the “non-electric” camping though ๐
I would say I would go for whichever is more economical. If I have to “dry camp” with the fancy pop-up it doesn’t matter where ๐
01/06/2009 at 7:08 pm #1899507We’ve camped at High Cliff and 2/3’s of the Family Sites have electricity. All of the non-electric sites are more for tent camping and there are a lot of really nice ones.
01/06/2009 at 7:10 pm #1899508There are no Standard electric family sites left as available on the reservation website. They are all Standard Non-electric that remain available for that weekend.

Avoiding these is one of the reasons I got a camper in the first place.
If all the hook-up sites are gone already, then sign me up for a spot at the group site. Looks like I’ll be putting my new Optima Deep Cycle to the test!
01/07/2009 at 8:49 pm #1899510Bummer, we do require electricity (medical reason) unless I invest in a $400 battery set up.

Generator Use
Portable generators, particularly the older models, produce noise at levels that may offend other visitors. Park and forest managers must balance the needs of visitors asking to use generators with the serenity that other guests expect. Managers have full discretion for generator use.Any camper who needs to operate a generator because of a health condition will be required to take an electrical site if any is available and not use the generator unless an outage occurs. Because the available electric site is not in a preferred location is not valid justification for the camper refusing to accept that site assignment.
If no other electrical site is available, the camper will be assigned to an accessible campsite with electrical service. If no electrical sites at all are available, the property manager or designee will try to find and assign the camper to the site where the noise of a generator will be least disruptive to other guests. The camper may be allowed to operate the generator there only under special conditions so the resulting noise will not bother other campers. Only under unusual circumstances will evening generator use be allowed.
Day-use guests may use a generator within the property in areas where the property manager determines that the noise will not be offensive to other guests.
I’m guessing that we wouldn’t complain, would we ????

As long as none of us intend to get loud and way drunk or bring a hand-gun along. I was there 4 years ago for a family reunion and some peripheral friends. One of the peripherals was from Milwaukee and didn’t think he needed to kept his sidearm at home.
During the day, we noticed 2 quarter-barrels being unloaded at the next family site over. Apparently, there was going to be a bachelor party next door that night. Hmmm… park managers…. do you not think that 20, loud, drunken, college-age men are going to raise a little hell until the wee hours? Might you not have found a more secluded place for them?
So, about 1 o’clock in the morning, as the level of rowdiness grew and the noise became unbearable for the dozen or so under thirteens we had in our camp, and after repeated attempts to ask nicely to tone it down for the little ones, the armed visitor among us finally had enough ( I think an insult was hurled at his wife if I remember correctly) and decided to confront the obnoxious (and quite vulgar) group, telling them to shut the – up or he was going to call the rangers. That didn’t go over well, the shouting esscallated, and the aforementioned handgun was drawn and pulled on the most vocal of the young drunks. As you can imagine, all hell broke loose.
Tons of commotion, police cars, (no arrests thankfully) and a whole lotta pissed off campers who didn’t get much sleep that night. So, leave your handguns at home and your attitudes at the park gates.
01/20/2009 at 6:36 am #1899513But don’t we need the guns for the snipe hunting? I’ve heard that the snipes in Calumet County are really big.
01/20/2009 at 10:45 am #1899514are we able to reserve a tent site on the state park page?
01/20/2009 at 1:32 pm #1899515My family’s now booked. Site 096. Would have loved to get an electric site but at least the battery will give me lights and this one’s near drinking water and a bathroom so that’s cool.
Hopefully the quarter barrels and hand guns will be on the other side of the family sites that weekend! ๐

I can’t vouch for the handguns, But the Quarter barrel will be directly between Zuma and I.
