What Characteristics do You Feel Make a Great Board Member?
01/10/2021 at 12:44 am #2067552People skills are huge – the ability to connect with fellow geocachers. I also feel that the ability to think outside of the box is important to contributing as a Board Member. In addition, listening to what the members of the the Wisconsin Geocaching Association want is significant. If elected to the board, I would be here to serve the membership. In order to serve the membership effectively, I need to be a good listener.
The views expressed here are that of myself only and do not necessarily represent that of the WGA board.
01/10/2021 at 8:53 am #2067564The ability to work with and create a community, not just within the board, but within the membership is crucial. For the past fourteen years, I have volunteered as a counselor at Badger Girls State, a civics workshop for high school juniors. In that one week, it is my responsibility to create a family among 54 young ladies from a variety of different backgrounds. Like teaching, my function is less of the ‘sage on the stage’ and more ‘the guide on the side’ which is a skillset that will help me as a member of the board of directors if elected.
Creativity and open mindedness are also valuable skills. Maintaining the core values but considering ways to continue to stay relevant require balance. If the pandemic has taught me anything, especially as a teacher, it’s how to keep the things I think are super important and considering how to adjust those in an environment that is constantly changing based on a variety of different circumstances. I can think on my feet as I have this entire school year and I can also take a step back to see the entire picture and consider how all of the pieces fit within it.

01/10/2021 at 1:30 pm #2067568I like to hear different perspectives on situations and I feel like I do a good job weighing the pros and cons of decisions. I’m willing to put in the work. I’m willing to help out and whatever way the membership or the Board needs me to. I think I also can bring some levity, some fun, some “let’s do this” attitude! I’m looking to continue the successes of the current board and learn from any issues of the previous administrations.
Please note: my comments are mine alone and may not necessarily reflect an official stance of the WGA Board of Directors.
01/10/2021 at 9:31 pm #2067580First, being able to listen and understand many perspectives. It is very likely, that if there are 9 persons sitting on a board of directors, there could nine slightly different viewpoints on the subject matter. Working through differences and coming up with new solutions will be important to move the organization ahead.
Being a great communicator. This does not necessarily mean the person that is the most boisterous or the one who loves to talk all the time. The word needs to get out and be understood by many to understand. And much of the time this does not mean that the person that is willing to jump out there in social media land first is the best choice. Someone that can choose their words carefully and with great meaning can be inspiration to many.
Being a giving and generous person. Someone that is willing to step up and volunteer is very important to the everyday activity in the organization. If everyone does not fulfill their responsibility within the organization, it will begin to falter.
01/20/2021 at 6:08 am #2067666In this day and age: Flexibility. This past year has shown us that being flexible in the decisions put forth will shape the group for the days/months to come. So much is uncertain, but one thing has been clear, that the WGA will continue to do what they can to promote geocaching in the safest ways possible.
Of course, there are several other characteristics needed. Good communications, creativity, people skills, etc. However, a love for geocaching and a willingness to help others enjoy this hobby/sport as much as you do is also key.
