A For fun question, let your imagination loose. If you had the all powerful powers of being Geocaching HQ and could make any change you want, either new or modifying something current, what would that change be for the game/hobby of Geocaching?

What would I change about geocaching? Hmmmm…  One thing I would change is a way to make a ignored cache or a cache that is out there from an inactive member easier or a better ability to adopt it. Of course you will have to give a ample amount of time for owner to respond but let others adopt it instead of letting it go to wayside. One other change or modification is the event caches having to be so far away from another event. Really does it matter that there are 3 events in the same town in the same day. Traditions will be broke with this new rule. Traditions need to be honored that is why they get called traditions. Also on a fun rule we all get a new geomobile on cache number 5000 or 10,000 lol.

All opinions, comments, and useless drivel I post are mine alone and do not reflect the opinions of the WGA BOD.

I would like to see more consistency in the enforcement of the distance between caches.  The rule is already in place, but I have seen, and been affected by this distance not being enforced. This may seem trivial but the integrity of the game should be honored in all aspects. I have been denied rights to place a cache because I was only 524 feet from and existing cache, while a few months later a cache was placed approximately 300 feet away from one of mine. True, it does not take away from my cache or the one that was placed in the radius of mine, but again the granting of a cache with in 528 feet of another weakens the premise of the rule.

I think the biggest change I would like to see made to geocaching is to bring back virtual caches.  I can understand the reason why they went away, but some places would be a very neat place for a cache, but a physical container would be impossible and there is nothing that would make it an earthcache. An example of this would be a medicine wheel we visited in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming. This ancient place is somewhere that a physical container would be forbidden, and it isn’t something built by nature.  This is also a place we felt would be inspirational to a lot of geocachers, but because of the moratorium on virtuals, there is no way for us to bring cachers here.  Other than that, I enjoy the way geocaching is running aside from a few tweeks to the website, but that is just little things that can be worked around.

My posts should in no way be considered as the views or opinions of the WGA or its Board of Directors. All posts made under my name are my personal opinions only.

The things that come to mind immediately are CO’s not maintaining their caches, and not having checkers on puzzle caches.  If you’re going to be a cache owner, I believe you have an obligation in maintaining your caches, whether you have 10 caches or 1000 caches. If you cannot maintain them, perhaps you should not have that many.  I’d also love to see checkers on all puzzle caches.  I know that sometimes that’s part of the puzzle’s difficulty, but I’d rather be right, then search for something in an area that isn’t there.

Penalties.  Lets just say for example we don’t follow the rules hiding a cache. For instance, placing illegal swag inside, using the cache location be showcase a business, etc…If proof (picture) is proven and sent to a publisher, a 1 year ban on letting that geocacher hide caches.  Oh I know it sounds so out there, but that may help us eliminate people drilling into trees, staking into trees, digging, ruining the environment, passing out beer and or knives to kids.  Yes I know that would create more sock puppet accounts, but locking into IP addresses, and even turning the hiding cache privilege over to the premium members will help generate more income for GC.com. Turning off for the free members.

I have gotten feedback that my above post is not written the way I intended it to be taken. In no way was this intended to call out or put the reviewers on blast. My point was that I think the game is great the way it is, and I couldn’t think of anything I would like to change. I cannot even begin to comprehend the time and effort that our reviewers put into what they do. I unintentionally cast them in a bad light and want to ensure all that this was not my intention.

Our reviewers deserve the utmost respect from all cachers and we need to use the avenues given to us to submit questions and  concerns regarding their decisions.

Please forgive me the poor wording and lack of detail in my above post. It was never intended to call anyone out or make anyone feel unappreciated.

I have learned that I should have addressed my concerns with one of our approachable reviewers and worked towards a resolution with one of them.

A change I would like to see with Geocaching would be to bring back Virtual Caches.  I have really enjoyed the locations they have brought me to.  I can say however, that I have also been to a few pretty lame ones as well.  I think the thought behind virtual caches is a great one and there needs to be a system that would allow them to be hidden again.
