Thanks to everyone who has said yes to being on this year’s ballot for the WGA Board of Directors.  As you know, the BOD is made up of 9 different individuals who have 9 different personalities and this is absolutely a good thing! However, this might mean that you might have a strong opinion on a topic being discussed, but when the vote comes in, your opinion was not of the majority.  How would you handle that, knowing that as a BOD, you need to proceed in the direction that the majority of the BOD voted?

    Hi Marie,

    Awesome question!

The quickest answer is, “Majority Rules”. 😁

Moving forward is the best option and is easy for me to do.

    Hello Marie!

This is something I deal with every day at work. Not everyone will agree, but you go with the majority vote. Sometimes you’ll be voted against, but it’s best to just continue moving forward. Need to keep the “end goal” in focus, and do what’s best for the greater good of the group, and those that would be affected by the decision. Another key point is to maintain respect for everyone you’re working with, even if you don’t agree.

On the other hand, if there is something you’re truly passionate about but others are not seeing it your way, one thing I have done in the past is take a step back, and verify if the others are truly understanding the message you’re trying to relay. It’s possible the vote against you could be something as simple as miscommunication.

    Hi Marie,

When there is discussion about a topic, I will listen to others’ opinions and state my own.  I don’t have any problem with fighting for an unpopular position, or a new idea.  But, once a vote has been taken, I will fully go along with the majority decision.  I understand that my perspective may be different, and it’s best for the team if I support the group decision.

LOL, just saw that the title of this section was “Failure”!  I guess I don’t always think of not being on the upside of a vote as a “failure”.  Sometimes it’s just a challenge to your perceptions, and an opportunity to grow and expand your understanding!

Everyone has already stated everything I would have responded. The only thing I have to put it honestly…if the majority is against you, get over it. Everyone was able to voice their opinions. All are valid. But where ever the majority fell, that’s it. Deal with it. Thanks!

    Hi Marie,

I have served on boards in the past and have learned that some people can dig in their heels even when the majority is voting in a certain direction. This creates friction in future meetings. When this occurs, I try to reach consensus. Not “I win, you lose” but taking everyone’s input and achieving “I can live with that” for all members.

Whenever you work in a group setting you are going to have different opinions on a topic/ path forward.  I would work to make sure everyone’s voice is heard including my own and try to move forward to a decision.  Optimal if it is a consensus but if not take a vote and move on.  The key is to listen.

I agree with the statements of the others.  It is important that each board member has had the opportunity to voice their opinion and be heard.  That also means each person should listen with an open mind because often times it is not one opinion that is best, but a combination of opinions and ideas put together.  Once the final decision has been made, the entire board needs to support it.  That’s not failure, that’s part of being a true team.

I think everyone here has answered just the same as I would.   There will be differing opinions and just because the majority agrees that one is better, that doesn’t necessarily mean the other is wrong or a bad idea.   Just that the majority felt that one was better than the other.   And if one is passionate about a particular idea, don’t give up.   Just because it wasn’t right today, doesn’t mean it will never be right.  What was wrong today,  may be right tomorrow.
