Candidate Question: Have You Proved Yourself as a Worker Bee?

WGA Board members are often called on to do volunteer work to improve caching in Wisconsin. What have you done prior to seeking this position?  For example, Geo 100 classes, placing caches for events, placing caches for the IAT or Yellowstone Trail or other activities.  Are you willing to do this for the next 2 years?

I believe I have the potential to be a worker bee. I have not yet been involved in any geocaching classes, cache placement for events, or other activities. I think my location has been somewhat limiting as well as being fairly new to the WGA. As a board member, I would absolutely look forward to becoming more involved in helping with activities in the northwestern portion of WI.

Several years ago, I helped set up and run a Geocaching 101 event at Edfest in Cornell, as well as volunteer at a fall campout in Brunet State Park. Last spring I played an instrumental role in placing multiple caches and an AL for the spring picnic in Brunet. This past fall, I set up an Adventure Lab for the Yellowstone Trail series. I’ve hosted and co-hosted multiple CITO’s, hosted a Community Celebration event, and now co-hosting a monthly Geocaching event. Absolutely, I plan on continuing to set up and help out with events, as well as place caches.

I have always been considered a “worker bee”. I am retired but still work part-time as a lunch lady.  As far as Geocaching is concerned, I have both hosted and co-hosted  CITO events, and numerous community events.  Hiding caches for these events is probably the most fun especially if there is a theme.

My favorite event to host is Geocaching 101.  I developed a display that I believe shows new and fairly new Geocachers the basics of Geocaching that anyone can understand.  I show various containers by size so folks can see what they are looking for.  I have held this class at various events, including a Girl Scout group, Sandhill Wildlife Area and West Bend $1000 Cache Bash.  I am currently working with the WGA to produce a duplicate Geocaching 101 display so we can educate more areas of Wisconsin.

This past year I did my first Adventure Lab.  This is part of the Yellowstone Trail Adventure Lab series.  It was quite the learning experience and I plan to do more in the northwest corner of our great state.

I will continue to do events, Geo 101 and volunteering to promote this great adventure for as long as I am able!!!!

I have placed and maintained my own caches but have yet had the opportunity to help with events or anything else. I look very much forward to helping out with all that is needed of me given the opportunity. I am reliable and willing to work.

I have conducted a geocaching 101 class twice at the local library, as well a geocaching basics presentation to the local mens club. I helped with hides at the last spring picnic and have held 3 events of my own. I look forward to helping continue to improve geocaching in Wisconsin.

I have been on the WGA Board for many years.

Let’s just put it right out there, yes, I currently have physical challenges due to a medical condition. However, I have not let those challenges stop me from contributing to geocaching and WGA, I just do things differently. My strengths are in the administrative and organizational things.

This past year, there have been things completed “behind the scenes” for the WGA that I had the fun coordinating with the other BOD members who live within a reasonable distance from me and a few volunteers:
– Hosted a Spring Workday at my home to clean out the trailer.
– Hosted a West Bend merchandise pre-order packing, plus item preparation (lots of shirt folding) days at my home.
– Hosted a Fall Workday at my home to do trailer organization, inventory and storage bin replacements. It was also restocked before going to winter storage.

Yes, I hauled the WGA trailer, and stored it at my house from May-November. During that time, I also did maintenance – repacking the wheels plus refilled the propane tanks used for the grills.

If you attend a WGA event or come to the WGA booth at West Bend, chances are you saw me there. I try to be present to answer questions, sell merchandise and troubleshoot things.

I work behind the scenes figuring out the merchandise options, placing the orders, picking orders up at the screen printers and receiving orders from the vendors.

Outside the WGA, I coordinate the Waukesha Winter Janboree, 19 years running. It includes a Geo101, a meet and greet morning and lunch at a local restaurant. With the help of local geocachers, we placed 48ish new caches this year in conjunction. Yes, I had a local geocacher help coordinate the hides and a local geocacher assisted me with placing mine. I am also “mentoring” two geocachers who are planning their events for 2023.

I retired in May 2022, so I have had more time to put into things.  WGA needs a balance of people who can do the “leg work” and those who can pull the plan together and recall the needs from past experiences.
