01/11/2021 at 11:34 pm #2067594In the past, the WGA has made a point of hosting CITO events, hosting 27 CITOs, mostly from 2010 – 2015. Do you support the WGA returning to the practice of hosting CITO events? thanks zuma 01/11/2021 at 11:55 pm #2067596I firmly believe that CITO events are important and essential in the Geocaching Community. It is an opportunity and time for local geocachers to give back to the communities and spaces that have so graciously allowed us to place geocaches. Having said that, I don’t think it is important who hosts the CITO event as the quality of the actual event is. Local geocachers hosting CITO events probably makes more sense in that they are more familiar with areas that need attention in terms of clean-up. Since the WGA has more members than Board Members, it CITO events are encouraged, it would seem that we should be able to have a good number of CITO events throughout the state of Wisconsin, both in the spring and again in the fall. However, in the absence of a local geocacher (or geocachers) being willing to host, I would expect the WGA to step in and host a CITO event. The views expressed here are that of myself only and do not necessarily represent that of the WGA board. 01/12/2021 at 6:40 am #2067597Going back to my original candidate statement, I think that CITO is one of those tenets of the game. It’s a practice akin to bringing a pen and a ‘cache first aid’ kit along on your adventures. Bringing back events would increase general importance to membership in addition to giving newer caches a souvenir. Events also make different elements of the game fun and something that can be done with other people. My distance runners at the middle school look forward every year to the ‘Garbage Run’ where their team has to bring back garbage of varying colors. Points are awarded, by coach’s discretion of course, to the team with the most intriguing/entertaining item and general fun has had by all. I think that as long as CITO events are being hosted, it doesn’t matter who does the hosting. The WGA should have a pulse on where the events are taking place, because as was said previously, local hosts would have an idea on the needs of specific communities. I see the WGA’s role as a support role; how can the organization support different areas of the state with CITO events and if there are resources needed, the WGA has the man power to help. The views expressed here are that of myself only and do not necessarily represent that of the WGA Board of Directors 01/12/2021 at 2:52 pm #2067602I definitely remember those days and it was fun visiting the different areas of the state. WGA offers financial support to members who would like to host a CITO event. Knowing there are parts of the state that have strong membership that host CITO events, perhaps it is time to look again at the other areas and support/encourage/ mentor members to host a CITO’s the other areas as well. I see CITO’s as being a great member driven activity that need to be supported. 01/12/2021 at 5:40 pm #2067609I haven’t attended many WGA CITO events, perhaps the last one at High Cliff probably being my first. Since, I’ve been to a few WGA sponsored CITO events and thought they were well run by membership. It is my understanding, the WGA in past years gave a stipend to members who applied and hosted a CITO event. I see no reason why this shouldn’t continue. I would like to see a CITO component to the WGA campout and/or picnic. With the Geocaching.com rules against event stacking, the CITO event would either have to take place of the normal event or the normal event would just have a CITO component. I think if the membership wants the WGA to bring back a stand-alone annual WGA hosted CITO event, that is something the board should look into. Please note: my comments are mine alone and may not necessarily reflect an official stance of the WGA Board of Directors. 01/12/2021 at 7:26 pm #2067612In most instances, it is my belief that a CITO event should be run by an individual or team from a localized area. Someone that has familiarity of the area and the people that live in that area. The WGA is always requesting more member involvement and this is one of the best ways that a member can be involved. The WGA does “sponsor” a number of CITO events each year. In their sponsorship, the host member usually receives items to aid in the cleanup process and other WGA/geocaching items that can be used as prizes or handouts to the attendees. In 2018, I agreed to adopt the local 12th Annual Appleton Park CITO event from S|S. This is an event that was great fun in the past and had numbers of attendees in some years of 50-100 people. In late April that year, 24″ of snow dumped on Appleton and the event was postponed until the second weekend in May. That was a real killer to our numbers! We only totaled 7 CITO volunteers that year. It would be great to see this event back in full swing again someday! Maybe something like partnering up with a business or an agency (DNR) in hopes that our efforts could gain us some benefits in the partnership, might make a good WGA hosted CITO event suggestion? 01/20/2021 at 6:30 am #2067671I am not sure what else I can say that hasn’t already been said. The WGA does sponsor several member CITO events. To have the WGA go back to a sanctioned event…I would be afraid of drawing people away from the member events given that the goal of CITO is to clean up the environment. I am in no way opposed to it. But I feel the WGA does a great job in assisting and supporting these events currently.
