Any thoughts on networking/communication between geocachers?  Many WGA members communicate with each other by posting messages on social media, but relatively few seem to use the WGA forum at the WGA website for that purpose.  The WGA Facebook page isn’t able to have its members directly post messages (only Facebook “groups” can do that).

This has been discussed by the BOD numerous times and as of yet there is no resolution.   It is still a work in progress.

As a current BOD Member, I can tell you that we have been working on this. As a Member, I agree. I can’t go into details. I will leave this post as it is as the new board will have voice soon.

Why can members not post to the Facebook page? I have a page set up for our wrestling club in which members are allowed to make posts. They can make text posts, even post pictures and videos. It is an excellent communication tool that allows many to see the successes of others. The can be an inspiration to some that might not have had the determination otherwise.

As new platforms and channel become available, the old ones lose favor. As my circle of “friends” on Facebook expands, I find that it take too much time to scroll through my newsfeed. For that reason I have put a time restriction on my Facebook time. I don’t have a simple answer for the best way to proceed, except to listen to the membership and try to accommodate their wishes.

All opinions, comments, and useless drivel I post are mine alone and do not reflect the opinions of the WGA BOD.

I would have to say that I lean more towards being pro on the thought of making the Facebook page a group instead. There is obviously two sides to the issue of having Facebook being a more instant response, it involves closer regulation. In my local geocaching community, we have a Facebook group and it seemed to be a well liked, effective communication between the members. I also understand that not everyone uses Facebook and it would more be a secondary form of communication to the main site.

My opinion is that the forums on WGA site are pretty basic.  I’m not complaining, and I gather from reading above that it is something that will be difficult to perfect.  I use facebook, but that seems limiting in some ways too.  I’m not a social media aficionado, but I think it’s great that you brought it up. Keep the ideas coming.

The views expressed here are that of myself only and do not necessarily represent that of the WGA board.

A few people have asked me about this very thing about the website. Perhaps updating the website would help? If it is already a work in progress, we will see what the new BOD offers.

In todays society communication is everywhere. Social media I am not a huge fan of but it is a way to hear what the community thinks so as BOD members its another tool to hear.
