There has been a good WGA effort to engage youth in Geocaching and connect with activities with the WGA.   It seems like there could be more.  What other proposals would you bring to the Board for consideration?    Thanks

Awesome question when I first brought up the kids club when I was on the board I had some ideas with the help of others of the board about having a jr board member or 2. Get the kids more involved with doing presentations at the events and in their local schools and clubs. I also had a crazy idea of if we can get a kids group running awesome we could take it to groundspeak about trying to get it world wide base kids club. We need the kids participating more we need their feedback. They are the future. Would love a kids member list and possibly kids a kids newsletter in future. Thank you.

Being on the board currently, I know that we are working hard to find more activities that involve and engage the youth members of our organization. I don’t want to step on any toes of the board members who are diligently trying to make some of these ideas reality, but I can say there are some things that I would like to see added to the agendas of our yearly events. I’m a big fan of the WDNR’s kids activities, and I think we can take a literal page from their book. For anyone that has not discovered the WDNR kids club, it is an age based activity book that brings children out into nature. Scavenger hunts and other learning activities based on botany, geology, astronomy, and the wildlife of Wisconsin. I would like to expand on that even to include the history and culture of our state to appeal to the interests of more of our young members. The biggest help in this endeavor would be engagement from the parents. They are the best source of information on what kinds of activities their children would enjoy. This way we would be able to better serve our young constituents.

My posts should in no way be considered as the views or opinions of the WGA or its Board of Directors. All posts made under my name are my personal opinions only.

I like scavenger hunts, previously we used home depot craft kits to keep kids entertained. Maybe we could get some safe science experiments in the works. Sky is the limit. I have 3 kids and I know it is hard to keep them entertained and involved with things. I feel where the current bod is at and going into the future it will be exciting.

I think a kids club is an awesome idea. Speaking as parent of a 6 year old who has his own account, he loves it (CRB05). Some things that have helped him stay interested in the last year have been finding some creative caches, helping me prep caches to put out, going caching with friends and finding cool places. He has even gotten one of his friends his age to go with us. On the flip side, I was approached two years ago about a gentleman possibly doing a class at the Boys & Girls Club in town for kids after school to get them interested in geocaching. If we can present it as a fun way to get kids outside and doing things, they will take to it in stride. It might be an option to approach some of those organizations and see if we can generate some interest at a kid level. Then maybe they will turn around and get their parents involved also!

I can still remember the prediction by Trudy and the Beast, many years ago, that my niece, Messa, would be the first geo-kid to host an event in Wisconsin. Messa and I just laughed at that but it was true, she was very much into geocaching and enjoyed our adventures together.  Now a Minnesota resident, Messa is starting to get back into geocaching and is looking forward to finding geocaches once again as an adult (am I that old??).

I present a geocaching unit at a local Girl Scout day camp that is very well received.  It is a fun afternoon and I am finding more and more of the participants have done geocaching in the past which has meant I am upping the game to include a multi and even a fun puzzle.

I think the WGA will never go wrong by keeping events family friendly and encouraging children to attend.  I have seen fun crafts, treasure hunts with maps, mystery caches geared for kids .. it comes down to creativity and having the patience.

I also believe in letting the kids lead so it might be identifying the active kid geocachers and partnering up so they can grow by sharing with the other kids.
