With 9 different personalities on the board, your opinion may not be the one chosen by the group. How will you handle this? And those less enjoyable tasks (like washing dishes or typing up event descriptions), how do you feel about spending your time doing these things?

01/13/2014 at 3:39 am #1973935Beccaday, I would not have a problem if someone asked me if I could assist in any job duties that are required while helping out at a event if I was nominated to be a Board Member. If everyone helps out and takes on duties everything will get done sooner. The only thing I would not be able to do is help haul heavy boxes.
01/13/2014 at 4:14 am #1973936I would hope that no matter who gets the nod for the director positions, that they, as a group, get along well enough to work together. Obviously, there will be 9 folks with 9 different personalities and that is as it should be. We cannot be puppets, parrots or robots. Ideas have to be hashed out and there may be ideas that fall through or get scrapped altogether. The idea is that whatever occurs, it has to be the best case option to support the membership or to hold to the mission of the WGA. Will toes get stepped on, sure but hopefully bruised egos heal and the group can move forward.
regarding the second part: In the past, I have heard the following statement several times regarding getting things done, whether it was planning or running events or other functions: “many hands make short work.”
things need to get done. pitching in and assisting is part of the job.Things that others don’t want to do still have to get done. It is also a lead by example thing. While it may not happen every time, having that attitude shows through.

01/13/2014 at 5:11 am #1973937I’m happy to offer up my opinion, but in the end it’s only that – my opinion. I have no problems recognizing a good idea when I hear one. As far as working, well that was in the job description when I signed up, so I’m ready and willing.

2. I’ve been on boards and committees before as well as having been a stage manager and assistant director for a community theater a few times. Things that need to get done will get done, whether I’m telling someone else to do it, asking for help, or doing it myself.01/16/2014 at 1:51 am #1973939The board operates on a quorum or majority system does it not? On any board that I have been on before, every board member is allowed to voice their opinion and bring forth ideas, which are then debated and voted on my the entire board.
Once the decision is made, it is the duty and responsibility of each board member to present the results as a united front, whether their idea was adopted or not, whether they agreed with the idea or not.
It is not about personalities. It should be one board working for the greater good.
Understanding that there are differences in what people perceive as the greater good, you may find that if you give someone else’s idea a try, maybe next time will be your turn.
Any maybe this time it is your turn to do the dishes!
01/17/2014 at 6:48 pm #1973940Hey…I’m a Navy “N” man. The mission comes first and if I have to do it (and am capable…I don’t do tree climbs anymore) it will get done so the mission will be a success.
I’m certain there will be disagreements between board members about various ideas but I’m open to all ideas that keeps the WGA strong and vibrant. If I have an idea that is “pooh-poohed” it could be a generational thing or just a plain BAD idea. I can accept that but I’m also hoping that if I criticize another idea that I’m probably seeing it from a different angle that should also be taken into account.
