The hours can be long running events, the rewards are unseen and on top of your job and family, you will have to be working online with people across the state to provide events and develop programs to the members. At least one will always be unhappy with you. You may only get one cache in during the Spring Campout or Fall Picnic while everyone heads out and hits the trails.
Why do you want to put yourself through this? Why do you wish to be a WGA Director?
Following the signals from space.
01/13/2014 at 3:45 am #1973947With my husband being on the board already Walkingadventure I know what some of the demands that being a board can be. Lot of times we head out early, maybe like a day ahead so we can cache before the event or stay later and do some caches after the event. I personally feel when there is a event, I hate to go away to cache as I am afraid I would miss something or miss meeting someone. I rather stay and socialize.
01/13/2014 at 4:51 am #1973948Having done this for four years, I really thought hard about this. How nice it would be to go to a WGA event and just socialize and cache without a worry that something wasn’t getting done. Then, I look back and think about the idea that “it isn’t about the destination, it is about the journey”. I find that there will always be caches to find but the relationships made and the “thank you”s when the job is done is worth much more that the virtual smiley on GC.com
Yes, when I mention a caching event to my wife, I often get the eye roll 🙄 or the “isn’t there something else you should be doing” though she does understand that this hobby is important to me and she doesn’t get too freaked out about it when I go.
As one other question mentioned : are you a giver or taker?
well, I feel that being a giver and serving actually allows me to be a taker by enjoying the way others enjoy the efforts made on their behalf.Disclaimer : Always answering to a higher power.
01/13/2014 at 5:01 am #1973949When I think about the amazing places and wonderful people that I’ve met along the way, accepting this role is the least I can do to give back just a little bit. Now that the little hippies are older and a bit more self sufficient, I feel like I can manage to devote the time and energy that a board position would require. Those caches will always be there and in a couple of years, I can sit and relax and watch someone else run around trying to take of everything. 😉
01/14/2014 at 8:41 pm #1973950Because it sounded like a good idea at the time.
As far as long hours and hard work, just ask my close friends and family, I fail at doing nothing.
When it comes to not getting caches at events, oh well. check my record for caching at the WBCB. I have more fun helping other people.
If everyone was happy with me all the time, I would be the best liar that ever existed. Nobody completely agrees with anyone else, just ask your significant other.
So back to why I want to be a director…because I want to help out the people who seem to think that I can do this job. Also, having not been on the board for an organization with this broad of a territory, it might be fun.
01/17/2014 at 6:55 pm #1973951I feel that after 9 years geocaching…it’s time for payback with more than just placing some more caches out there.
