Robert L. Ross Jr. Can I get a refund of my $30.00 please ??
08/19/2011 at 12:48 pm #1952058Wow, I started this thread yesterday morning and then was too busy to check WGA most of the day. It really took off, didn’t it? I have to agree with most of you who aren’t terribly impressed with this challenge thing. Not only does it seem somewhat pointless but it is kind of hard to use. I can’t even find them! And some of the ones that I’ve checked on from this thread have already been deleted.

08/19/2011 at 1:23 pm #1952059“challenges” really ? It is all so…………………………..
ignominious
This is kind of like Little League….they now have phantom ‘pitches’ to issue an intentional walk……………..

and George Orwell08/19/2011 at 1:44 pm #1952060I got a challenge for you, I hid a container somewhere deep in a woods, I posted cords on the internet, your challenge is to find this container and sign the piece of paper inside, thus proving you were there.
Youve been challenged!!I think this should have been added to the WAYMARKING page. not geocaching
“people started placing virtuals everywhere, so we stopped them” What!!! and this is better?
I think id rather go find a bunch of residential neighborhood caches and roundabouts, those sound funner right now.

08/19/2011 at 1:52 pm #1952061I just logged a challenge cache, because I completed the requirements last night without even knowing it was a challenge. My opinion is still the same on these things, and the more I look at them the more I think they should be filed under waymarking.
08/19/2011 at 2:21 pm #1952062It’s groundspeaks sandbox so if ya don’t like challenges don’t do em. Kwitcherbellyachin.
On the Left Side of the Road...08/19/2011 at 2:22 pm #1952063I just looked up the challenges locally that survived.

http://www.geocaching.com/challenges/view.aspx?cx=CX521The bar challenge seems a lot like GC1EBA . There is traditional cache at a one of those locations GC1E5A0 .
The Fonz challenge already exists GC1FGFC .
I know that the challenges are not going to simply go away. Too much effort was put into developing the idea. I am going to embrace it and try to use the parameters to develop challenges that seem like a virtual cache. Look forward to this later today.
08/19/2011 at 2:44 pm #1952064I just explained these to the household and the response was the same from all…”I thought the GPS has to be integral to the hunt?” Mrs. GR mentioned the ALR component…It’s just very interesting how many “guidelines” these violate.
I got it…a terrace challenge!
On the Left Side of the Road...08/19/2011 at 3:01 pm #1952065Clearly there was a lot of abuse in the early hours. Let me fill you in on some specifics.
1. The challenges that players can be create MUST be location based. Worldwide challenges are groundspeak only.
2. The challenges are not reviewed in the conventional sense. Groundspeak is relying on the public to flag or vote down violations, such as non-geographic based challenges. Groundspeak employees (not the reviewers) are responsible for responding to flags and high negative votes and will archive those which do not meet the rules. Anyone logging a find before it is archived will keep their challenge.
3. For location based challenges, (such as the Skip to my Lou challenge), the task must be performed at the location specified (or very close by). People claiming these challenges from a distances are not logging within the spirit of the rules. This includes people in Madison logging something in Wausau, which does not qualify as “very close by”).
4. You can also Flag logs if you want to. I suspect the lackeys would get to them eventually, but they are a bit overwhelmed with all the stupidity of people posting locationless challenges in the location based category.
5. I HOPE that they are going to improve the search facility if they keep this going.
I put this whole thing in the “Be careful what you wish for” category. I know many people were pining for the return of virtuals, which were really from a different time with much less people and (IMHO) much less emphasis on number running. Several people tried to warn GS, but with all the votes for returning virtuals, the warnings were not heeded. Please keep flagging/voting down problem challenges and hopefully this thing will straighten itself out in a week or so. And while we are waiting….GET OUTSIDE AND FIND A CACHE!
08/19/2011 at 3:13 pm #1952066Challenges are counted as finds, but by hovering over a users’ find count you can separate challenges from caches. Personally, I don’t like these at all. They don’t seem to have to do as much with location, if you know what I mean… when you’re posting a challenge, you don’t need to post actual coords, you can just put in an address. To me, this is not geocaching.

In their big rush to have something new for the big party at frog HQ, they didn’t spend enough time thinking this one through.Besides, there is such a short list of reasons when flagging that many that should get flagged, wont. The only list they have is “Prohibited” (Apparently EVERYTHING is permissible), “Offensive” (They all offend me, is that relevant?), Spam (Reviewers would filter this out right away), and “Unplayable” (This one actually makes sense – like “Recommend Archive” on a real cache, because conditions change over time)
How about a “Has nothing to do with geocaching” option? “Does not require use of GPS”? or “You’re wasting database space with this information”
08/19/2011 at 4:41 pm #1952070The nice part about the challenges is that as easy as they are you have to go out of your way to do them. The subject has certainly created a lot of buzz here. Probably the best thing to do is don’t create them. don’t do them and like Dave said go out and find the real geocaches. Just another item to get over with and move on.
08/19/2011 at 5:31 pm #1952071I created a challenge today. I have been wanting to place a cache at a location for a while, but did not want to create another off-set multi cache that few people would find. I could not get permission near the place in question. The challenge format allows for a pseudo virtual cache:
