The BODs has discussed COTM continuation ever since Favorites started being offered. It seems that (lately) our web page has been down more than up, and that discourages members from visiting. We have also used Favorites for choosing caches to visit, since it is on the GC page I’m already at when searching. We haven’t used the Bookmark List in many months. We do like the banner for the page… when it loads.
12/07/2018 at 1:12 pm #2061366Should a prize be awarded similar to POTM?
Personally I don’t think so, that’s why we have the banner. I know there has been some issues in the past with this.
But I think creating another poll for people to vote on will just create more confusion. Just my opinion.

I agree with Bob.

12/07/2018 at 3:31 pm #2061372I know it’s sort of human nature, but why does everything become a contest of sorts? I would agree, prizes not needed. We have some COTMs that couldn’t get the banner, but no big deal….
I do think with the advent of the favorite points, the whole program is kind of redundant, maybe, and adds a job for someone on the Board and the webmaster with not a lot of ‘return value’. Favorite points don’t always match up with our own personal preferences, but they are a starting point. Maybe there could simply be a cache featured in different areas of the state each month, similar to the way HQ does things?

Interesting idea.

12/09/2018 at 6:40 am #2061390Speaking as an owner of COTM caches, and as geocache seekers. I can say we see in logs that our caches are often sought based on favorite points that are easy to see on the GC search list. We also do get the same comment from those who’ve planned further and actually opened an individual page and seen the COTM banner. We do the same as we plan searches in other parts of WI or the USA. I can see eliminating this feature if it is a burden on our webmasters and deferring to Favorites points. Cya, Jim

12/09/2018 at 9:42 am #2061394Interesting ideas. Is there a way to see which caches in an area have received the most favorite points in a given amount of time? Maybe through GSAK or Project GC? If there is, we could award COM based on how many fav points the cache received in a month.
All opinions, comments, and useless drivel I post are mine alone and do not reflect the opinions of the WGA BOD.
12/09/2018 at 4:10 pm #2061397You could see if that’s a possibility, or maybe just throw out a request for people around the state to submit a short feature on any cache they really enjoyed somewhere. Put some of the work back onto the membership…it’s a simple way to get some engagement and give the BOD a break from doing everything. There are caches we’ve really enjoyed that probably don’t have tons of favorite points because they aren’t near a big event or a busy caching area, for example. Members could look at their own “favorited” caches and go from there, for instance.
Disclaimer….we ourselves wouldn’t be offering up gadget caches. It seems these days, caches like that get tons and tons of favorites and I appreciate the engineering that goes into creating one, but they just aren’t our favorite kind to find. I’m sure we’re in the minority here, but there you have it.
12/09/2018 at 5:43 pm #2061400That works for 11 out of 12 months. When 1000 cachers descend on Washington County in August, there are quite a few Favorite points given out in 3-5 days. Other than that…
12/09/2018 at 6:18 pm #2061401Many rural areas of WI dont see much caching traffic. One find per month is not uncommon. Thus great high percentage Favorited caches may not have any votes (or visits) over a given period of time.
12/09/2018 at 10:08 pm #2061403I tend to agree with the last two posts….certain areas see tons of traffic. Most of the caches in the state that make our own favorite list are the ones in the lower traffic areas, actually. Often they’re also caches that have been around quite awhile, so they weren’t being found when the whole “favorite” thing was rolled out. So if a variety of folks were willing to share up a little about one of those favorites, maybe we could get a little bit more well rounded cross section of things. Plus, we all have different kinds of caches we enjoy, so that would get different points of view as well.
12/10/2018 at 7:34 am #2061405Cache of the Month and Favorites are both ways of promoting quality caches. I don’t believe that’s too much of a good thing.

Hmmmm . . . A weekly or monthly post on the site featuring a favorite cache of the members . . .
