I’ll be buying mine directly from Garmin….I get a great discount as we are a distributer of Garmin products.

Can others get a discount if they order through you???

The easy answer is no….however I will need to check the rules and see exactly how many I can purchase for myself I believe it said one per model per year but I’m not sure if that meant one road gps one trail gps one fishing gps or if it meant one of each specific model…

I figured as much, but it never hurts to ask. Thanks anyway.

oh damn…if it can also do the associated multi/virt/puz icon’s…I think I’ve just spent some cash….

After reading and posting on the gc.com forums related to the Colorado; I have bad news to report. As it currently stands, the map overlays do not show any geocache icons. You select your cache from a menu and then a little blue pin will show up on the map. The other caches within your map view are hidden even in the geocache mode.

In other words, unless you select a specific cache to chase, no cache icons are represented on the maps and you could walk or drive right past a cache without even knowing it was there. Not very friendly for caching on the fly and you will have to plan out your routes on mapping software before heading out unless you like back tracking and criss-crossing.

I’d like to think they could easily resolve this issue but who knows if or when a Firmware update would be offered.

Oh the Garmin Colorado is OK and just OK. We have the 60 CSX and this was not an improvement. The Whereigo feature is lame and IMHO pure stupidity. It turns into a virtual game and you can load up different scenes. We were on a planet and had to put on a space suit and walk fifty feet to find food and such. For us it had nothing to do with Geocaching and is just there for the “kids”. For $599 bucks I would spend my money elsewhere.

I have posted the above in the thread stealers thread but was requested to post it here also.

I do want to add that I wrote the above at the Las Vegas Airport and I was tired.

Some high points of the Colorado is that it is paperless. It will have full descriptions on the screen. I guess for the price of a GPS’r and PDA it might be worth the cost. However, we were very limited on the use of the unit due to Garmin and Groundspeak pushing the Whreigo game.

I was able to find out that they are making cartridges for zoos and other areas to get you to find certain points. That would be neat but the “game” they showed us was still lame. If I did not have the 60 CSX and a PDA and was looking to upgrade I would check out this unit more thoroughly.

Further, without fully checking out this unit I can not give a yea or nea on the subject. It is just my personal limited experience with the unit.

    Thank you for that.

And in case you missed in thread stealer’s, I too think that the “Any Location” Wherigo games would be pretty lame and no improvement over the games already on the GPSMAP60s for example. What I’m hoping for is that the location specific “Cartridges” have more to offer with interactivity and a real geocache at the end.

As I have no Palm this unit is very attractive to me. I’m hoping the issue of the map overlays as 3 Hawks has mentioned will be resolved shortly (if they are working on it that is).

While it is certainly a nice unit, don’t forget that you can pick up a Palm on Ebay for $20 or less and Cachemate for $8, which is certainly a smaller expenditure than $599, assuming your current GPS is adequate. This will take care of your paperless needs.

For the folks that have seen the paperless caching features of the Colorado or know more about them…

Is the paperless information you get for caches as full featured as what you get via CacheMate? If someone switched from using a Palm to a Colorado, would they be annoyed because some things they used to have in their Palm would not be available?

For example, are the following features available?

    – Easily view hints (important :))
    – Multiple views/pages of cache information rather than a single “flat” view
    – Ability to view past logs
    – View travel bug information (what bugs are supposed to be in a cache)
    – Ability to mark caches found and record notes

I get a kick out of the YouTube video.

Oops, I dropped it 2 feet onto a pile of soft rope, landed display side up, and it survived !

Oops, I dropped it 2 feet into a 4″ inch deep creek, landed display side up, and it survived !

Oops, I dropped it 2 feet onto the car seat, landed display side up, and it survived !

    What a durable unit!

That cracked me up as well…I thought about that today as I dropped my GPS60Cx on to the edge of an open ammo can….
I’m watching that UTube Chanel so I’ll post the new vids as they come out.

I don’t know about these features because they were hyping the Wherigo thingy. I will see what I can find out for you.

This link gives you an interactive page where you can spin the dial and check features.
