Hopefully things will have dried out a bit by this weekend, but you might want to check with the park before making a trip. Many of the roads in this area are closed, or even….gone. This link shows some typical devastation in the general area.

The Kickapoo is cresting at an all-time high, which is saying a lot for a river that floods frequently.

Last time I saw the Kickapoo 1 foot high would be impressive.

I know, it was barely a trickle when we were down there a couple weeks ago, but that’s not the case right now. Check out the photo galleries on the lacrosse tribune website if you haven’t already. The landscape is significantly different at the moment. How badly was BRF hit?

I was in Leon today and the Creek there was well over the banks. I have seen this creek and it can have up to 8′ banks. That’s a lot of water.

I called the park today. They said that all the main roads in the area are open.

Western Vernon County was hit hard, but the area around the park is not bad. The Park Employee said that if you are on main roads, you should be ok. If you are taking back roads through some of the coulee areas, you might run into blocked roads.

    Brian,

Thanks for checking. We have just plain stayed away from anyplace south and west for now, having seen the mess that needs to be cleaned out. Most of Wildcat is on pretty high ground, though of course the area near the canoe launch is probably pretty wet right now.

The school where I teach is just off the highway on the river that is closed right now. Where the train derailed. It’s just across the county line from Vernon County by a few blocks. Somehow, I just don’t think my vacation will be extended, however!

It’s been kind of freaky, as we’ve driven even around our less clobbered area, to see those little bitty trout streams looking more like small rivers. Usually you can walk through or jump over them. Not right now!
