A lot of you take your kids caching with you. What do or don’t you let them do, as far as letting them reach for or look in holes.
I’m considering taking the grandchildren along once and a while. and I’m concerned that they might try (play caching) on their own when I’m not around, and what they might get into.TygerD
can you tell us a little about your grandchildren, for instance, what are their ages? i think a lot depends on the ages of kids.
One is 3yrs, right now she probally wouldn’t go without her mother along. The other is 4 going on 5 and she likes to do what papa does. the rest are to young to understand what is going on, or old enough that they would listen to me when I explain to them its not wise to stick their hands in places where they don’t know whats in there. Its my concern that when they see whats in some caches. they might look in simular containers that are not caches when nobody is watching.
We are hoping to take our grandson out a few times this summer. He is 2½ now. We do take two handicapped adults out and they are sometimes like young children. One thing we really stress is that you can only find these with the special machine (GPS). You may want to have a “special” flashlight and pair of gloves and show them how to use it when looking into holes. Tell them porcupines sleep in holes and we have to check for that first.

Timberline EchoesMy kids can get very carried away with the whole caching experience. I try to scope the scene out first and warn of barbed wire, poison ivy, drop-offs, etc. You’ve got to be fast! As for holes, they have learned to only stick their hands in large ones where they can clearly see the cache. They are 5 and 8, but it took lots of supervision and talking to before, during, and after the excursion. We have had minor injuies, but nothing different from what they get at home playing in the yard.
I have brought my 3 year old with me, but only on the easy ones, in areas I know, like city parks. He always asked me now “Dad are we going to find toys in the woods?”
I think if you good about it they will have fun . The hard ones? well they will have to wait, some of those are hard on Mom and Dad!!
We have a 4 yr old (Kamilla) and an almost 2 yr old. I take them on almost every cache I do. I try to do level 3 or less difficulty with them…depending on what the conditions of the cache are.
Kamilla is a very curious child and I let her explore while caching. As long as I can see her, I don’t have a problem with her poking around, I even let her hold the GPSr and she navigates sometimes. Except for micros, she’s found most of regular caches we have found. I think it’s because they’re closer to the ground. LOL Heck the youngest one found one the other day! There was a cache we did that I needed her for.
As long as I can see them, I don’t worry much. My girls are rather hesitant about sticking their hands in holes and places that might have ucky things in them. Most of the time they’ll just walk around looking under things and eventually get bored and play with sticks. My girls are now 11, 8, 6, 3 and John is 1.

Thanks for the replies. We took one of our grandsons out the other day. I explained that we had a gspr treasure hunting box, and were going to try and find a treasure. We didn’t find it (squirrel ate it). So we went to another that I found before.
He’s into bouncy superballs and was quite happy when he saw one in the cache, which we traded for. Had to show his mom when she picked him up.
He was quite insistant about climbing over the fallen trees him self,as him and his older brother do that, by his other grandma & grampa’s house.
After watching him attack a jungle-gym in another part of the park,I may have found my evil monkey hunter/helper when he’s a little older. LOL.TygerD
