Been a while since i started a topic, so… as I was hauling in the tree my family and I started talking about what Christmas traditions we liked. We all said giving and the reason for the season(my wife likes that button) but I asked them what beyond that?

If you celebrate a holiday this time of year what is your favorite tradition?

I have several, but I think my favorite is going out with the family, cutting the tree and bringing it inside. Love the smell of cold pine in the house..no need to decorate it for me.

2nd would be burning the tree in the fire pit next summer..WHOOSH! Bonfire anyone?

I would say going to church for an early Christmas Eve service and then having all of our relatives (most of them anyway) over to our house for dinner and visiting.

We have a white elephant gift exchange. Everyone brings an item that is wrapped up and we put the presents in a pile on a table. We then draw numbers to see who goes first. The second person can either open another present or steal the first one. This continues until all the gifts are open. Then the fun begins! The last person to open a gift has their choice of all the items, followed by the second to last, and so on, until the person with the #1 gets the final say in what gift they get at the end.
The rubber chicken makes an appearance every year! It is a tradition we look forward to every year. Any Holiday event that brings family together for food and fun is a blessing. 😀

One of our favorite Holiday memories is Jingle Bell Rock (GCB1BC). The activity on Dec.15, 2002 was a jaw dropper.

My wifes school xmas gathering had a set of dove wall sconces that made it every year too… everyone was trying to size up the gifts to see if they came back 😛

My wife’s family had a tradition of gifting a boxed rock. Each year somebody else got it. If memory serves, my mother-in-law originally put a rock in a box to add weight for a rather light gift to my father-in-law. Somebody must have thought that was cute, and kept it going. I never had the honor of receiving the thing. If I had, I think I would have taken it down to the creek and tossed it in and put an end to something so goofy.

We agree with Trudy and the Beast about Jingle Bell Rock memories but also enjoyed Candy Cane Lane GCRJ4D because we had never been to that area to witness the holiday lights before that cache.

Our gag gift for many years was a hideous, pink ceramic sleigh with Santa… each year someone in the family unwrapped the sleigh…we added stickers and signs to it… it even made the rounds on birthdays… for wedding shower gifts, etc… until my son was divorced… guess the ex got the sleigh!

Traditionally we hide a pickle on the Christmas tree (not a real one… an ornament). The child who finds the pickle gets a special gift. My kids loved this growing up… now the grandkids search however the 10-year old has an advantage over the others… they’re all younger than 4!

We do the white elephant gift exchange and also have the pickle ornament hidden in the tree. The get togethers always start out cheerful and fun, but by the end of the night, it’s more like Festivus with the ‘Airing of the Grievances.’ Thankfully we never gotten to the ‘Feats of Strength’.

The Charlie Brown Christmas special was on TV tonight, and we try to put up our tree while watching that each year. Tonight was no exception. We can recite almost every line by now.

When the show first came on in 1965 it was at 6:30 (this was before the networks turned that half hour over to local stations). I had choir practice at 7:00 just a block and a half away, but I really wanted to see this show, so I watched it all and ran to the church when it was over. My more grown-up older sister missed the end and got to practice on time.

As a small boy, I remember the family gathering around our big old Philco radio. Dad would dial in http://www.Pandora.com and we would listen to the Tans-Siberian Orchestra play Holiday music. 😆
