Someone made a comment (or a joke, rather) about North Milwaukee & violent crime a few days back in another thread.

If you are going into North Milwaukee, wear a bullet proof vest 😛

I chuckled about it because my own experiences in the North Milwaukee area never once gave me the feeling that I would be safer wearing a bullet proof vest.

I know he was just making a joke. Not saying he’s one of them, but the truth is there really are a lot of uptight people afraid of big cities. I know some of them.
Some are so scared of violent crime in big cities, they won’t even travel through town on the interstate!

I just wish people could relax more in bigger cities and not feel so paranoid about walking around a corner thinking they’re going to get robbed at gunpoint.
    It’s only Milwaukee!

Here is some data about where Milwaukee stands on the national crime rate rankings. You may find this interesting.

For cities overall in regards to crime rate, Milwaukee doesn’t appear on the list until #40. Of the cities that rank higher than Milwaukee, I’ve visited 19 of the 39. None, maybe with the exception of Detroit, really felt all that bad.
#22 on the list, North Charleston, SC was my home for about a year in 2007.
In 2007, there were 23 murders in N Charleston, which at the time had a population of about 97,000 people.
Even though I lived in quite literally the worst part of town, at no point did I ever feel I’d be safer wearing a bullet proof vest.
If you’re going to get shot, it’s likely because you owed someone money, or were involved in some kind of drug deal gone bad or something.
It’s not like criminals just shoot at random people for no reason. (criminals deserve SOME respect, dont they :P)

So Milwaukee sits at #40 on the list. Madison comes in at #255 on the list.
I thought people may find this data interesting.

Oh, and Tacoma ranks higher than Milwaukee… Tacoma! I would have never thought.

These stats include all violent crimes which “*Includes murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and motor vehicle theft.”

No offense intended, but when you grow up and live in a little town or a small city where violent crime is almost non existant, when you go into a bigger city your more watchful. I do live in a small town but go to school in Milwaukee. There are certain parts I will not go to unless absolutly necessary. I don’t think most people think they are going to get shot, it’s the muggings and car jacking that people are worried about! 😯

I know what you mean. I’m from a small town, too. Wisconsin Rapids.
I just wish for people to stop being so afraid. Relax.

It’s especially people from small town & rural Wisconsin who are the ones that are so afraid of the city.
Yes, muggings happen, and there may be carjackings, but it’s not like these sorts of things happen every day. Milwaukee is NOT Camden or Oakland, CA.

And do I dare say this? Most white people from rural and small-town Wisconsin are afraid of black people. Especially in Wisconsin, a lot of whites live by the stereotype that all (or most) black people live a life of crime. I personally know people who might see 2 black dudes together and panic. It’s pretty sad.

I’ve likely visited more urban & metropolitan areas around the country than most people here, so I do feel qualified to make that observation and make that statement.

I agree with this also! I’ve worked in factories with people with a wide range of backgrounds. Most are just like everybody else, it’s the unfortunate news coverage we all see. Most crime seems to be african americans commiting a crime against another african american. It’s also hard to break the stereo type when you see it all the time on the news. Take today, five shot in Milwaukee, I turned the news off after that, it gets old.

You don’t have say “African American”. In fact, black people PREFER you refer to them as black people. Please trust me on this.
“African American” is a term used only by white people behind a social barrier trying to be politically correct.

The irony behind all of this, is that the term “African American” is far from being politically correct, as not all black people are from Africa. And technically not all are American.

The real political correctness comes from breaking down the social barriers and to stop being so uptight trying to be all politically correct & stuff.

“African American” should really only exist on an official document where there is a box that says, “check race”
But even with that said, today I’m seeing a box with the word ‘black’ more & more frequently.

Above all, most importantly, NEVER refer to a black person as “colored”. That will, and I guarantee, just make someone really mad.

Wow! I’m a little surprised to see something like this here. I think this goes way beyond what “Off Topic” was intened for. This is a subcect more suited for an editorial in a local newspaper. I was very uncomfortable reading this post and think it should be locked before it gets out of hand.

Oh? I was under the impression that off topics were off topics. Suppose you’re suggesting that off topics should be more “on topic”?

This is a subcect more suited for an editorial in a local newspaper.

I sincerely hope you aren’t so uncomfortable reading your local newspaper as you are reading this thread.

For anyone else who is concerned, clicking a thread titled “city crime rates”, they shouldnt be surprised when they discover a thread thats about city crime rates.

As for the other “off topics” in the “off topic” section, such as back to school, facebook applications and fantasy football, we need to address those issues too.

I think it’s time for the board to do something about this guy Helidood. He is definitely not an asset to the WGA.

Quoting simply for the sake of quoting. And so you can’t edit it.

I’m simply shocked that someone would stand up and single a guy out and say he isn’t an asset to an organization.

Who are you, exactly? And what reasons do you feel you’re more qualified to be a member of the WGA than I am?

    Easy now boys.

Helidood: I think his problem is more to do with only the first 2 postings being in regards to crime rates. After that, you veered significantly.

Greenthumb: He’s new. Let him acclimate a bit before you write him off. Besides, he’s still entitled to have opinions.

Funny I should read this post for the first time today. Today, the day after there were six people shot in Milwaukee in one evening.
