There was a drive by shooting in Appleton this morning near my house. The house behind one of my coworker’s was the “target”.
It’s real safe here.
And my hometown of little ole’ Berlin just nabbed 30+ drug dealers and it made the USA Today. So much for safety.
then there’s the field of pot out in the navarino nature center……
01/22/2010 at 2:49 am #1920766I have read through this thread, I don’t know really how I want to respond. I work for this city and have to live in this city. If you look at the cache map you will see a large void on the near north side and north side of Milwaukee. There are wonderful parks that I have located where I feel that the view or park is a wonderful place. One such park is in the Riverwest area. It is Resivor Park. The park is above the neighborhood and has a breath taking view of downtown and towards the lakefront. This park is one block from where five poeple were shot last night. Many areas of the city are great during the day and change dramaticly at night. I have thought about placing caches in a park and then saying that this cache should be searched during daylight hours only, but I felt that this would offend some people. I also would feel terrible if someone were to search for these caches and have something happen to them. There are some caches that I would not go near in this city because of their placement. Am I fearful of these areas, no not for me or my wife, but for other cachers who don’t know the area may not really know what is lurking.
Edit to add: Crime can happen anywhere. All I ask is that no matter where you are always keep an eye open.

I wanted to comment, but didn’t want to hijack the other thread.
01/22/2010 at 5:17 am #1920769I just saw a poll on a local news cast. they asked people if they thought Milwaukee was a safer place than last year: 24% – yes 76% – no.
01/22/2010 at 5:23 am #1920770of the 76% that said No, I wonder how many say it’s a more dangerous and how many see no change.
For the 24% who say yes, it would be interesting to know who those voters are and where in Milwaukee they live.
01/22/2010 at 6:32 am #1920771There’s a Friendly little town in Sandland that used to have the highest per capita murder rate in the entire country.
Size doesn’t matter…

It’s all in the perception of the observer!
Me, I think it switched when I was working for my dad and we would go into certain parts of the city. We would hire temps to help out so one of us could sit and watch the equipment in/on the trucks. The last straws before that was when I was accausted for money until my partner came around the side of the truck and the guy realized I was not alone and two guys ran up to my dads truck on ran off down the street with a ladder of his, all within a week. We felt like we need security, thus the temp for the day.
01/22/2010 at 2:35 pm #1920773It is no wonder that people are afraid of crime and develop prejudicial attitudes toward certain groups of people. Politicians from all levels of government have been exploiting the fears of the people for years, claiming there are criminals/terrorists around every corner. As a result, the prison industry has become big business (lots of $$$ involved). Do a little research on what the country / state / cities spends on corrections.
I’m not denying the existance of crime, I’m saying that fears have been blown out of proportion by politicians so that they can be re-elected.

Appleton is another story! Where do they rank on the list?
You should be VERY afraid! 8)
Maybe that is why I am afraid of Appleton…
Because I know Marc is lurking nearby!
