    So…
Everytime I’ve asked about placing a cache in Milwaukee County Parks, I’ve gotten the don’t ask, don’t tell answer. Any idea if this is a similar policy for City of Milwaukee Parks? We just realized that there are several of those near our new house (which would work out great for this new series we’re planning), with some good cache spots, but there’s no office for us to visit and ask permission. Any idea where we’d go to ask, or maybe someone knows that these are all generally ok to hide a cache in. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

You have asked the wrong people about this policy. Early last year, prior to placing Red Squirrel and Diamond in the Rough, we requested explaination of Milw. Co. policy regarding geocaching. The response we got was “Milwaukee County Parks, Yours to enjoy” and explained “put the dirt back when you are done and stay away from the golf courses.” It was clear from the response that geocaching may not have been fully understood by the respondant, but we have taken it to mean that as long as we did not interfere with others activities and as long as we left no trace, the parks were open for our activities. In short, we have permission to cache in Milw. Co. Parks.

I am not aware of a city parks department. I do know that MPS holds some very nice park property and permission to cache on these lands may be granted through the School Administration offices. Other city park properties would probably be under the jurisdiction of DPW Forestry Division. Your Alderman may be able to give you more information.

Hey thanks! Now I have an idea at least where to start for asking permission for those parks.

Thanks also for explaining to me the Milwaukee County Park situation. Do you think it would be best if each individual cacher asked permission like you did for the Milwaukee County Parks, or do you think the response they gave you generally means that all geocachers are welcome to enjoy the parks as long as they treat them with respect?

I am sure that the response we got then was a very general response. The parks were made available for caching to anyone who did not abuse the privilege. Now that Sue Black is in charge of MC parks, I would be interested in her input. She is very aware of our activities and might even be reading this thread.

Being a Newbie I was wondering if there is (for a lack of a better term) a database started of rules/policy for caching and placing caches in the different counties, cities and municipality parks in the state. The reason I ask is, I have seen different postings that ask what the policy is for a city or park with a bunch of different replies on the policy. Instead of each person asking a park official if they can cache in their parks would it be feasible to create a Database(if one does not exist) with the policies of the different counties and cities. It could be a work in progress database with a printable type form on the website, printed out by the member wishing to place a cache. That member would ask the proper official to fill out the form/policy. The member then would send it to the Database Keeper who would enter it into the database and file the form. Just a thought.

I post this with the thought that I have been thinking of placing my own caches and live in a place that is close to 4 different cities/municipality.

I hope I did not over step my bounds or on anybodies toes by this posting

These forums were created with intent of providing our members with the opportunity to freely exchange their thoughts. Your comments are welcomed.

I don’t want to say that your idea is not workable, but it is probably best that individual cachers establish contact with the land managers when placing a cache. This gives the land manager an opportunity to see exactly where the cache is going and to assess impact on that site. Blanket authorization gives us a lot of freedome but this isn’t always in the best interest of the park. In your neighborhood, consider the differences that might be seen in Fonferek’s Glen and Pamperin Park. Seeking permission on a case to case basis provides additional advantages for the land managers as well.

There are a couple of web pages you can refer to, but they may not have the complete “database” of information you’re looking for. For Wisconsin, the WGA site has this page that lists the known restrictions in our state: http://wi-geocaching.com/hide.html
For a worldwide collection of local and regional rules, you can check out this site: http://www.geocachingpolicy.com/
