Hi Candidates! I’d like to know your opinions on forming committees to deal with various issues that may come up? What are your opinions on committees? Do they help or hinder? Would you advocate for forming a committee and listen to the advice given? How would you go about setting up a committee if given the opportunity?
01/10/2022 at 6:53 pm #2069254Currently the WGA uses committees and has for awhile. I am all about the use of committees. Mostly they help vs hinder. Some committees are good for BOD only and some are good to have membership involved in the committees.
I do advocate having committees as the entire BOD doesnt need to be involved until the committee chair is ready to bring it to the BOD should it need approval. The BOD meets once per month and committee updates are given around that time.
Setting up a Committee is usually done by the current BOD and members are encouraged to join in on a Committee if so desired and approved by the BOD.

I think committees are almost always a good thing. They help distribute the work, and help keep people focused on a smaller subset of tasks that are not necessary for everyone to be involved with. If I had to think about when a committee could hinder something, I’d say it would be when the effort is small enough that it doesn’t make sense to have a committee formed.
As for how to form a committee, I would first look for volunteers that are interested in the effort, and potentially depending on what the effort is, open it up to community members for outside involvement as well.
Great question!

01/12/2022 at 10:00 am #2069278I loved committees for the sake of delegation. Not all 9 people of the board need to be focusing on all topics. Some people may be more versed in newsletter where as others strengths are to creating new activities or caches for an event. Its all in working together and relying on each other to get things done.

01/12/2022 at 10:55 pm #2069301Hi silyngufy,
I personally like committees. I think it is a great way to take a concept, get people with a “horse in the race” to discuss options, and come back to the BOD with suggestions and recommendations. Many of the groups I volunteer with would get bogged down in the discussions if we didn’t split off a committee to explore the topic. And I think that if the BOD sanctions a committee to give recommendations, it would be foolish not listen to their advice!

01/14/2022 at 11:36 am #2069305Many volunteer boards carry the load of the work, that’s one reason they are on the board, but to get members involved is key to building broader ownership and hopefully excitement for the organization and their events/programs. Ideally this would increase the number of activities the organization can sponsor. If you form a committee you better be willing to listen or it is a waste of time for all involved.
Not unlike getting volunteers for the board you have to listen to the members and find those most interested in getting involved – they are potential committee members.
01/17/2022 at 3:46 pm #2069326In general committees can be very helpful to get things done provided there are members willing to serve on the committees. Getting members involved is a way to help other geocachers give back to the game/sport without having to make a time commitment to the level of a board member. It is also a great way to develop members to eventually become board members. That being said, a committee for the sake of having a committee or a committee with no interested members is not helpful. Committees should come and go as needed. If there is no member interest in a committee, the board may want to rethink if that event or project is one that they should be putting effort into. The board can’t do everything, so active committees are important to events happening or projects being completed.

Individual committees can focus energy more on one item and also can put a group of people together that are perhaps more knowledgeable on a specific topic.
