Ok everyone,
I bet this has allready been asked. But I would like to know how to use a compass in conjuction with your gps to find caches or even working with a map. Im taking a wildland firefighter course and they did some info on working a compass with a map. Pretty confusing I think.
You’ll probably get expert teaching and advise from Natloh2. As someone who also is involved with orienteering (only using maps and compasses), he’s got knowledge in all of these areas.
I would highly, highly suggest reading the book called: Be an Expert With Map and Compass. You should be able to find this book at your local library, or outdoor stores such as Gander Mountain.
Before Geocaching, I was very interested in navigation, map and compass reading, and orienteering. I did a lot of reading on Map and Compass use. I found this book to be an excellent source of info. It will teach you to use your compass and navigate with topo maps. It also has practical exercises to practice your map navigation skills.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone venturing out into the woods.
I sent smokey & the teacher a note, and now there sure to be lost.
I went to our trusty city library and they didnt have didly in stock on compass usage. I ordered the book grousetales recommended and hopefully they can find it in thier lending system.
Till then stay tuned sports fans!

I plan on putting a cache in Lapham Peak Park as soon as the snow goes out. I’ll have the Orienteering course built into it.
