We have a get-together meeting set up with the State Parks department of the DNR to discuss the future of geocaching. Brian of Team GrouseTales and I will meet with DNR officials in Madison on July 31. From our preliminary talks on the phone, I’m confident we’ll develop a good relationship with the DNR. We’ll let you know more as things develop.

I try not to think of 35 as older. Makes my bones ache.
08/05/2002 at 3:08 am #1750009Name the date and time and I’ll be there. I’m thinking the picnic might be a bit to hectic to get good discussion on the topic. I think a meeting another time would be better.
08/05/2002 at 3:30 am #1750010As someone who was never athletic (too clumsy) I have found caching to be a great way to move my body off of the couch and into our state’s parks. I truly believe that caching leads to more tourism and toward the preservation of our state’s green spaces. A hike in the woods seemed to be pointless, but throw in a challenge, or a game, and all of a sudden, hiking is fun. I actually got excited when I bought my first pair of hiking boots. I even got 2 pair right away.
The best aspect of caching is the pleasure of doing this with my kids. They learn that exercise is fun, and they occasionally have the pleasure of watching Mom fall on her behind. Just the new market on bandaids should keep Johnson & Johnson in business for a long time. I am not an expert on caching, but see that this is a chance for me to spend time with my kids in the fresh air, exercising, and learning.
My kids have chosen caching over spending time hanging out with their friends. My parents are cachers, my sister just became a cacher, and I am related to at least one other cacher. I enjoy seeing my kids hiking the trails with their Opa and Grandma.
I would be heartbroken to learn that this hobby is prohibited by the DNR. Whatever I can do to help our cause, please feel free to let me know.

Perhaps during the actual eating stage.. that way those that are hooked on caching won’t miss out on their time in the field. I, myself, am counting this day as a ‘relax’ day and the only personal challenge I put forth towards this day’s goal.. is to not make a fool of myself (grins)..
~The Lil Otter08/05/2002 at 3:46 pm #1750013I think the picnic would be a good place to open discussions. Perhaps we can have an town hall meeting at the conclusion of the day’s events. People could stay after to discuss the DNR meeting if they choose to. This way we wouldnt be taking away from the picnic event.
I foresee that a more formal meeting for the purpose of discussing this issue will probably be needed.
If we list it as an event, we can all chalk up another find for coming to the meeting
08/06/2002 at 2:44 am #1750014I think the picnic would be a great place to start the discussions on the DNR situation. This would give everyone a chance to hear lots of ideas and then think about it more. Then later we should schedule a time just for this purpose. Maybe even come up with a date at the picnic for further discussion. I’m sure most of us would like to participate in this in some way.
Bill08/06/2002 at 2:49 am #1750015I agree with the others who said that we should talk about it at the picnic. Maybe during lunch we could have people at least give their ideas. I think that most people would be happy to take some time out from caching in order to help maintain the sport.
08/06/2002 at 2:59 am #1750016I’m with Brian… the picnic would be a good place to hold an informal meeting to get the opinion of a large number of cachers. More meetings may be needed in the future to hammer out the details of a proposed DNR policy, but we should get input from as many people as possible before worrying about the details.
I also think that any meeting should wait until after caching has ended (say 5:30pm or 6pm). Trying to hold a meeting while people are eating isn’t going to work well, and of course we don’t want to decrease the time we have for caching.
08/07/2002 at 5:21 am #1750017Since this seems to be turning into a vote page I would like to formally cast mine for an informal meeting after the caching is done. An open forum would be my choice.

Therefore, we’ve decided to initiate contact with the DNR now, before they formulate a final opinion on the sport. We WGA planners, are asking you to let us represent you to the Wisconsin DNR. By working together, we have the best chance of seeing that geocaching is allowed to continue on state-run land.
To make this work, it’s going to take a unified effort on the part of Wisconsin geocachers. If you have comments that you would like to see entered into the discussion with the DNR, please post them here. We will take your comments, consolidate them, and attempt to put them together in a thoughtful, cooperative manner so we can assure the DNR we are serious about helping them preserve the state’s public lands for all to enjoy.

08/10/2002 at 6:19 pm #1750019I’m not nearly has active as most of you, but I’ve really enjoyed the geocaching I’ve done.
Thanks for taking on the task of meeting with DNR. Half the caches I’ve looked for are in State Parks and I would hate to lose that piece of a camping weekend.
Thanks again!
