I am so stuck on a cache in Seymour, WI that has a containerless cache (Rockledge Grand Tour). I have only run across this once before, so I was wondering: what are some of the things that people have seen? What could I be looking for? What am I missing?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Well, first off, the end of a multi must have a container with a log.

So I guess you are talking about waypoints to the final.

Dog tags, or other metal strips. Attached to fence lines, telephone poles, etc.
I remember one where the coords were engraved onto the fence post itself.

Strips of paper or the like attached to something. Fake advertisements or lost notices.

Hmmm! Could it be just a log??? I’ve seen one like that before somewhere around the Green Bay area.

I read all of the logs and it sounds like the way point in question may be a piece of paper stapled under something. Only speculation on my part as I have not done the cache in question and probably never will get over that way.

Sigh. As always, folks, the owners of the cache (US) are ALWAYS happy to help when approach via email about these topics!!! It is very frustrating to (yet again) see of one our caches discussed in the public forum when we weren’t even contacted first.

I mean, there is a contact link right there on the page and everything.

Really, we don’t bite! Well, I can’t attest for Mrs. Gotta Run, but I promise not to.

You know, to everyone who commented here after clearly seeing this was our cache…

      What the hell?

I mean, it’s not like someone is asking about a cache in California or posting some hypothetical. You can clearly see who’s cache this is–or should have figured it out with 30 seconds of research.

Come on! You guys know us, and Marc I’ve given you enough hints on our caches and puzzles and taken enough phone calls from you that you know I’ll respond, and respond fully.

The FIRST course of action here should be to say, “What did the owner tell you?”
odysseyuwrf, you’ve emailed me before…why not on this cache?

And where is your DNF log if you’ve been “so stuck” on this cache?

This is just shameless and inexusable. Yes I’m P.O.ed.

Now then. With that out of my system, let me assure you that waypoint three is there on this cache. The correct location of the waypoint was alluded to above.

In order to save everyone the time of actually trying to figure out which of the possibilities it could possibly be, here’s a step by step:

      1. As you approach the coordinates for WP3, you will see two small sections of decorative, split-rail fence on either side of the path. The fence seems to be there for no particular reason, and it is the only structure of any kind within 30′ of this spot. There are no trees or other brush nearby, so obviously the fence is “it.”

      2. Go to the fence section on the EAST side. If you are approaching from the south (the school side), that will put it on your right. If you are approaching from the north (baseball diamond side), it will put it on your left.

      3. There are two railings on the small section. Find the lower railing.

      4. Find a way to look UNDER the railing. You may be able to do this by bending at the waist and turning your head. Or, you may need to lay on your back and physically stick your head under the rail if you are not as limber.

      5. Look closely at the underside of the bottom railing. You will see a set of coordinates there. Enter those coordinates in your GPSr.

That’s about the best I can do. If anyone wants a tour, I swim at the pool Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning, and I can meet you there about 5:15 a.m. to point it out for you.

Well, that would have saved me a lot of time on that one. 😆 I looked right at it about 5 times before I was able to spot it when I visited.

Can you specify which end of the railing the cords are on? I’m gonna visit this one soon and really don’t want to waste any time trying to find the cords without knowing which end of the railing to look at. Also, are you sure it’s still there? With all the recent DNF’s, you might want to go check on this one. I was going to post an Needs Maintenance log, but then I saw this thread and figured I had nothing to loose by asking you, THE OWNER, about the condition of the waypoint.

How about the coords to the final!? That should save alot of time and hazzles.

I only was looking to be educated on containerless caches. I did not intend for this to go the way it did. Sorry to everyone who responded and has been upset by the content of this thread.

I have only been caching for 3 months, and am still new to the activity. I did not intend to anger the owner (who has been privately messaged about this). I was not aware of any “code of conduct” that I should be following, and thought this Help thread was an okay place to ask these kinds of questions, since I was not intending to get secret info about the named cache.

I will stay out of the forums for now, and deal solely with the cache owners from now on.

I saw coords written on a small piece of wood in bark chips once. Now that’s evil..

I had an idea once to put coords on a broken brick (which was already at ground zero). The cache ultimately got nixed because of proximity issues..

I’ve heard about an infamous piece of carpeting or something of the like…

Then there was this “fun guy” I met once…

Let your imagination wander.. Of course these types of hides just produce lots of grumpy dnf’s and needs maintenance logs when those who feel entitled to log every cache as a find can’t find it.

It is a cool idea for a sharing/general ed. thread but alas it turned into a tip on an existing specific cache.. probably bound to happen eventually on a thread like this one or one on trying to solve a certain kind of puzzle…

odysseyuwrf, this is a valid question and I understand that even though you asked “what could I be looking for” on our specific cache, that this perhaps reflected a larger question.

I think everyone who has been reading this thread–and it’s been a lot of people–can see that our frustration comes from having a specific cache of ours discussed in these forums on multiple occasions.

And, it goes beyond that. We are not new to these forums. We are not new to the geocaching community. You know we help out on questions we are asked. For goodness sake, we have 200 caches placed and most people reading here have found one or another and we’ve taken calls or emails from dozens of you.

Marc, your post is particularly galling. Yes I am calling you out. You absolutely know how much this kind of stuff bugs us yet apparently don’t care. You know it was our cache. You’ve found it just a month ago so it’s not like it’s a foggy memory from years ago.

So rather than post a quick, “Yes, this one’s tricky, but just drop the owner a note and they’ll help,” you write a four-paragraph reply that explicitly includes how the waypoint is done??? I know you like to espouse how “the purpose of geocaching is to find the cache,” but why don’t you keep your spoilers to your own caches, ok? Oh wait, that’s right, I don’t see you posting threads here with spoilers to your own.

Despite the rude comments by one of the posters here, this is a very appropriate question, and thank you for asking it. After all the heading for the help forum says, and I quote: “Stuck on a cache? GPSR got you baffled? Ask here and we’ll all try and help!”

The answer is that there is a wide variety of things that folks come up with to add to the challenge of the find. Once ya find the first one, then it becomes easier, but creative types do manage to come up with new things all the time, so ya have to keep your mind and eyes open, and have fun with the search.

Some of the creative waypoints that I have seen include:

      Notchs carved on a stick
      Fake electrical boxes
      Fake plumping parts
      Fake drains
      Fake irrigation
Chain links with numbers encoded in them
      Fake nameplates
      Fake removable signs
Down a pipe so you have to float it out with water
Black numbering on a black sign
      Roman numberals

There are a host of other ways to hide a cache or waypoint, but that is a sampling. Really just approach each waypoint with open eyes and an open mind, and you should be able to find most of them. Personally, I prefer an ammo box under a stick pile myself, but creative hides do add an element of fun and variety to the game, so have fun with it.

And dont be afraid to ask questions. Most of your fellow cachers are more than willing to lend a hand, especially once ya post a DNF on a particular cache. There may be an exception or two, but those folks that gotta whine are the exception, and not the norm.
