Next month will mark the 4 month anniversary the first WI published Opencaching.us cache. Does the COTM implementation support nominations for this site also?

Just curious because I know when this site first came to be there was discussion in the forums that the WGA wasn’t taking a position for / against which I guess means it’s an equal to geocaching.com.

The code that creates the link to the cache page would need to be re-written to accommodate. Given the low number of caches, I’m reluctant to dig in to that right now.

To be honest, at this point there really isn’t enough unique caches on opencaching to warrant consideration. In fact, of the 21 active caches, there are only seven that aren’t cross listed (or at least indicated as OCUS only caches.) I own four and The Searchers have three. It really might take at least a year for it to get more established in this state.

Just a litle clearification… Don’t take my previious post to mean that the WGA will ignore caches from OC, or that they can’t be nominated. The only things that won’t work is the “link” to the cache page, and they can’t be added to the bookmark lists.

If they are that good of a cache, cross list them on GC. then they will be easier to post as COTM

Not the point. Not all roads lead to Rome (or in this case GC.) The question is whether this alternative listing site can be integrated in the WGA system.

Navicache and Terracache have never caught on and this one won’t either.

I agree with TBC. Note also that our monthly awards program is called “Cache of the Month,” not “Groundspeak Cache of the Month.” I would take that as evidence that all caches are eligible, and when an alternative to Groundspeak reaches a critical threshold that we would be open to other listing services. So far however, we have not seen a listing service break Groundspeak’s de facto monopoly.

I was just curious because I’ve done a number of the local opencaching caches (especially the non-cross listed ones) and think there’s some worthy of mention just because that listing service allows some things that gc.com doesn’t.

How well it catches on will be decided by those of us that play the game and how well they differentiate themselves. I think it’s interesting how they’ve taken some different approaches and some of that has recently been implemented on gc.com.

I don’t see any reason why we can’t incorporate those. At some point a couple years ago at least one Navicache was nominated. It’s going to require a few votes to make it a more pointed issue though. I had looked at navicaching and terracaching back in the day, but can honestly say I haven’t so much as clicked on an opencaching link. The vast majority are probably of the same mind as myself though and don’t really care if the neighbor’s grass is greener because the yard is so small.

I say go for it if you like and if enough other people try opencaching to garner some votes? Even better.
