As keeper of the COTM Honorable Mention bookmark list, I probably look at the COTM page more often than most. I’ve noticed that it is fairly common for people to nominate caches during the last week of the voting. (This month there were two nominated in the last week, one nominated today.) While I certainly wouldn’t want to discourage anyone from nominating their favorite cache, nominations in the last week are very unlikely to win (most people have already voted), plus people who haven’t sought the cache will not have time to go look for it. Maybe it would be a good idea to close nominations during the last week of the month. Even better, if possible, caches nominated in the last week could be “pushed” forward to the following months ballot automatically. Any thoughts?

If you have it open for only the first 3 weeks of the month, then someone who nominates a cache in the last few days of the open period, will likely not win either for the same reasons you mentioned. I know there have been a number of discussions around the COTM, but to me, the voting should be open ONLY for “NEW” Caches in the previous month. For example, the caches that were activated in the Month of September, would be eligible for Voting in the Month of October. At the end of October, you would announce the September Cache Of The Month. This method would eliminate the issues with late enteries and would more accurately reflect the name “Cache Of The Month”

That would unfortunately completely alienate caches in remote areas which already see very few of COM voters.

PCFrog is right, Dan, although I understand your point. Maybe if we restricted it to caches placed in the last six months or one year, we could meet both goals.
Also, there was a cache nominated in the third week last month which was in the lead until very near the end (Feed the Geese). I am not trying to stop these caches from being nominated, just place them in a poll where they will have a fair chance.
I was really pleased to see so many votes placed in the September poll. I don’t know if it was a record or not, but it is the most votes cast that I have noticed.
10/03/2006 at 3:15 am #1766109Im just bummed that ALMOST WI caches placed (or assisted by) WI cachers cant be nominated. I’ll go pout now. 😥
10/03/2006 at 11:44 am #1766110I just thought that I should point out that there is no rule that excludes past nominees from being resubmitted. Example: Feed the geese was not selected in September, it can be resubmitted in October if deemed appropriate. ~tb

There’s nothing stopping you from placing caches in Wisconsin…

I think she’s referring to a cache that was hidden just south of the Ill-Wis state line. I think Rogheff will know the one 😉
10/03/2006 at 8:27 pm #1766114All we need to do is get permission from the States of Illinois and Wisconsin, and the Federal Government to move the state border south about 500′
This is really quite simple.
