I noticed that there is no WGA State Park cache in Cross Plains State Park.   How does one get set up?    This isn’t a developed park, but there is some parking and trails.  The area is in the Cross Plains Ice Age Reserve (area may become future NPS site as they own adjoining land).   It is on WI DNR list of parks, so it would be great if more caches were put out there.

HI. Good question. Wisconsin DNR has an issue with being organized. You’ll find that signage and websites do not always line up.
When we set the WGA SPS series up, the lead naturalist for the state passed us a list of what was the “official” list of State Parks which is what we based our caches on.

I do not really understand the difficulties they have had on making these universally marked but there still looks to be an issue.

Capital Springs is another property that seems to be in limbo. The DNR website lists it as a State Park but the old faded sign there is the only designation as a SP. Capital Springs is also listed as a State Rec area. When I asked about that one, the state told me it was just a rec area so why list it as a SP? Good question.

Lot Dauphin just outside DePere is another Property. Listed as a SP, giant rock is etched as a SP, owned and operated by the Town of Lawrence.

AS long as it isn’t a SNA and the property staff has no issues with placement, then a cache can be placed there.Hope this helps. If not, let me know.

Pike Lake is another one that is mislabeled.  At the park there is a sign that says “Pike Lake State Park” but it is actually a branch of the Kettle Moraine State Forest – Northern Unit.  Not sure what’s going on there, but it isn’t on the official list of state parks.  I always go to the DNR website:

I found the cache at Lost Dauphin a little over a year ago.  In my research on this property at that time, I had found out that it had been a state park that had been turned over to the Town of Lawrence.  However, since that time, the property has been turned back over to the Wisconsin DNR – at least according to local property tax records.

The DNR has been trying to rid itself of some of the small seldom visited state parks for years but nearby communities don’t want to give up the status for tourism reasons. Oconto has been concerned with Copper Culture State Park…the DNR would like to turn it over. They have major budget issues maintaining their state parks.

and THEN Belmont State Park has a WGA cache, but it is not listed on the Visitor’s Guide and it is not on the state map!

It’s on the website, though!  Sheesh, they need to get a consistent list.  😉

This is an older thread, but I found it of interest. John and I are visiting all state parks this year (2021) and decided to visit all state parks listed on the DNR website, including Lost Dauphin and Cross Plains. So we’re going to 49, regardless of questions regarding their “official” status of state park designation. If they’re listed on the DNR website as a state park then we included it. But that means only 47 WGA-series caches to be found. No problem! 🙂
