I made the mistake this week of letting Pooh’s Pal hold my GPSr while we took him out caching. Many things are not as they were, but I’ve managed to get most back in order. One that continues to be a problem….once my unit turns on and gets past the “Garmin” screen, the thing is dark. Did a factory reset. Nothing. What works is to recalibrate the screen when I first turn it on, but that has to be done every single time I turn it on.

Any ideas? I have to hand that kid a yellow etrex, but I know he won’t like the mapping on that as well. 😉 Thanks.

Thanks Barry, Not quite the same problem, but I didn’t know of that resource, so it’s good info. I can see the buttons, but there is just not any backlight at all: only thing that helps is the screen recalibration.

Wish Pooh’s Pal could tell me just what he did! He likes to look at the map when we’re driving and says stuff like “over the river and then this way” and such. Like I said….the etrex will be a big disappointment! LOL

to brighten the screen, tap the on/off button, and a lightbulb shows up, hit the plus button (upper right corner) and will brighten the screen

That was it! I knew about that light bulb screen but pretty much forgot it existed since it wasn’t a problem. Thanks!

Better yet, just point your flashlight at the Oregon. This will save on battery life. (of the GPS, that is!)

And what would that do for my flashlight battery life? 😀

Don’t bother me with details like that!
