DaVinci Code

During my recent travels to India I was reading Dan Brown’s “The DaVinci Code” on the various plane trips. Wow what a page turner!
Let’s see, a story about cracking codes, searching for hidden containers, solving puzzles to open the containers, secret societies, and even mention of GPS.
Hmmm I can’t imagine why this book would appeal to a geocacher!

I really enjoyed that book as well. I also just finished the book that preceedes it – “Angels and Demons”. It’s written the same – you sort of feel like you’re reading the same book. But it’s still enjoyable too.

Which of the two should I read first?

I’d suggest reading “Angels and Demons” first. It’s the same main character in both books, and technically it does come first. In “The DaVinci Code”, it refers back to the first book a couple times. (Nothing huge, but maybe a couple things might go “Aha!” if you read them in order.) After reading them out of order, I want to go back and re-read “The DaVinci Code” to see if I missed anything.

We solved both of them over one weekend, with help from cachedivers. I would love to know if any of you enjoy the quest as much as we did.

I just finished reading the Da Vinci Code (DVC). At the time of the original thread, last February, I put a hold on it at the library. It took this long to get a copy — a large print copy at that.

The story is a log of a 5/1.5 multiple. Aside from the hero picking up a girl-friend along the way, it was just like caching.

I’m 30 pages into Angels and Demons, the prequel to DVC. I also see there are 4 caches world-wide that use DVC as a theme, maybe more soon.

I actually liked the first book BETTER than DVC. Both were interesting though since, along with geocaching, art history and linguistics are my hobbies (and reading). As for his first two books, they are not as good, Brown tends to be formulaic meaning if you read A&D and DVC you will be able to figure out the twist by about page 50. If you don’t want to read the book you can always wait until 2006 when the movie comes out starring TOM HANKS! (??!!)
Anyway, we were going to do our series based on DVC were you had to plot the finals of the caches to find the location of the puzzle but, alas, the parks locations could not cooperate I DO think it would be neat to do one in DOwntown Milwaukee as a virtual puzzle using the symbols on some of the older buildings. It would be a combination of geocaching and research that could be very cool…and a lot of work!

Oh, I wish I would have known that. I could have offered my copy to you to read. I actually got a paperback copy in India dirt cheap since they charge in rupees.

Maybe I should put it in a cache for a trade item.
