Caching and hunting covering a variety of terrain. 25 WSQ’s in a day sounds like a fun time being that I have the time off. That reminds me, I need to go “grab a stick” for that one cache I’m hoping to do.
11/15/2010 at 11:11 pm #1938813Haven’t determined where or if I’ll be going caching, but I’ll be wearing orange all the time, even when home. There’s a couple of crazies that hunt the fields behind my house.
11/15/2010 at 11:16 pm #1938814Safe caching via urban hides or woods where hunters are not allowed such as a city park.
11/15/2010 at 11:22 pm #1938815I actually did an article for my Examiner gig on deer hunting and its impact on geocaching. There is also a follow up article with ideas for “safer” caching in our area during the season.

IMO, blaze orange, at least in the form of a cap, is a good idea from about September through year’s end.
11/15/2010 at 11:25 pm #1938816On the topic of a couple of crazies giving everyone a bad rap….we were out somewhere, can’t remember where, but there was a liquor store with a big billboard that read….”your hunting party starts here!” illustrated with a bunch of refreshing looking longnecks.
I was rather flabberghasted to see it, so I think I blocked the location from my mind.

11/16/2010 at 1:49 am #1938818Hunting by day, maybe a few caches by late afternoon/night. Also, for sure a couple caches on the way to and from the hunting grounds. (nice way to break up a 4 hour drive from Kenosha to La Crosse area)

That sounds good, but there aren’t any caches between my house and my hunting grounds, there’s just a hay field 😀
All opinions, comments, and useless drivel I post are mine alone and do not reflect the opinions of the WGA BOD.
11/16/2010 at 3:00 am #1938820We’re headed down to Florida for Thanksgiving, and we plan on doing some caches along the way down and of course when we are there. Might head out and do some in the area before we leave this weekend, and we will be staying out of the woods for these.

11/16/2010 at 7:34 am #1938821But the thing is , from September on is hunting Season for something. Weather it be grouse, duck, bow for deer, pheasent, rabbit, squirrle, Turkey or bear. And the hunting grounds are open to everyone. Ya want to know how many times I’ve had spandex clad Mnt. bikers try to kick me off a game trail, while I’m wearing my hunting vest and carring my over&under. You don’t have to were blaze orange during grouse hunting, but I do. so people can see me, and not be surpised to see I’m tottinng a firearm. And I have gotten a cacher or two while grouse and deer hunting.
And I will also add that the vast majority of hunters are not our drinking while hunting, but it takes just one idiot to screw it up and make the it look bad for all hunters. I’ll be hunting on my own private land, and I’ll bet I’ll STILL see hunter when I shouldn’t cuz some have total disregard for signs, cuz “They been hunting these woods for thirty years!” Well, a lot of things change in 30 years11/16/2010 at 2:49 pm #1938822Will cache on the way to and back from my home town & hunting w/brother…enjoy bow hunting more than the gun hunt though. There are indeed a lot crazies out there on opening weekend.
Had a great caching experience during hunting season last year…posted on log for GCKJ6W Lookout Above II | Last One Standing

😀 😀Speaking of hunting antics, I had to go back and read your log, which made me go back and re-read the cache description. Wonder if I’ll be up there this year to partake in the annual family antics? I love to walk around in the woods but haven’t shot anything in years. So now, I’m mostly there for flushing support. I can’t stand sitting around, so you’ll never see me in a stand or posted at the end of a trail, I will always be traipsing through the woods and more ofter than not, will be side-tracked by some late fall fungus when I will be startled and look up to see the 12-pointer trotting away from me. It’s happened more than once.
These days, I’d much rather lend my support after the season when my brother, the real Deer Hunter, has a couple hanging ( which he always does) and needs help butchering. We will be making some serious sausage this year, from the old family recipe, and that’s really the reward for me. Give me a young healthy 4-pointer or doe any day of the week, much better meat than some old sinewy mega-point buck.
You will never see anything mounted in my house; whitetail, walleye wabbit or otherwise, cause for me, deer-hunting is a lot like caching… it’s not about the Points!

Ya can’t eat them points, they don’t even make a good soup. But I will admit, I do have my 11 pointer hanging on the wall and the WIFE asks every year when I’m going to get it a buddy! 😉
11/18/2010 at 6:02 am #1938825My better half and I will both be out hunting… She likes to hunt even more then I do. To all hunters and fellow cachers that may be in the woods…Please be safe and enjoy the hunt.
11/18/2010 at 12:51 pm #1938826Trekkin’ is actually toying with the idea of going out this year…don’t know if he’ll follow through. He hunts with blackpowder, so the weather conditions have a big effect on that.
