I know this is really subjective, but I’m just curious……to us, a short hike is between .5-1.0 mile round trip. Anything less than that is maybe a little more than a park and grab to us, but not much more.
So what’s your definition of “a short hike?” (pa ruby would tell us it’s ‘dump it!’) 😉
12/20/2010 at 11:15 pm #1940621It entirely depends on the temperature.
12/20/2010 at 11:20 pm #1940622…or the terrain.
I recently had to go less than .1 miles from car to cache. Took almost an hour round trip because it was on rocks that were ice covered.
But generally I consider anything under .25 to 1 mile a short hike.
12/20/2010 at 11:33 pm #1940623I avoid defining this one on my hides because everyones opinion varies so much. As far as finding a cache we prefer ones that are at least .25 one way. Anything up to .25 we consider a park and grab.
.
12/21/2010 at 12:25 am #1940624I’d say anything from 0.1 up to 1 mile.
All opinions, comments, and useless drivel I post are mine alone and do not reflect the opinions of the WGA BOD.
12/21/2010 at 12:41 am #1940625I would say anything under a 1 mile round trip if you are in the northwoods, City Caching I would say it would be shorter, like in view of the parking area. LOL
12/21/2010 at 1:30 am #1940626LOL at sweetlife’s response!
12/21/2010 at 1:40 am #1940627Under 0.5 miles…. but I like Sweetlife’s answer too!! LOL
12/21/2010 at 1:59 am #1940628Any hike that doesn’t elict the kids whining.
12/21/2010 at 2:37 am #1940629I like kc9gbo response. 😆 A short hike for us is under 1 mile round trip.
12/21/2010 at 2:41 am #1940630I’d say 1 mile round trip.
12/21/2010 at 3:41 am #1940631I would say a mile round trip or so if its flat, if there are large altitude adjustments, then its less.

I believe “hike” or “hiking” is the acting of walking upright. The example you cite would be called “crawling” or “sliding” and I don’t think anyone would want to do that for more than 0.1 miles. (But I’d do it again in a heartbeat).
I however would define short hike as however far that puzzle final or lonely is from the parking area. It also depends if it’s straight line distance or actual distance to the cache.
12/21/2010 at 1:55 pm #1940633My preference would be for the CO to state how far the hike is then everyone is forewarned. Some days I feel like a longer walk than others and the weather is a real consideration.

I usually do this for anything over half a mile.
It’s just a “walk” if it’s under a mile. A hike generally entails the bringing of supplies.
