That pretty much means getting out of the car, doesn’t it?
On the Left Side of the Road...12/21/2010 at 3:39 pm #1940636On the cache attributes, the “short” hike says < 1K, so that's 0.6 miles. Agree. The "medium" hike is between 1K and 10K, or between 0.6 and 6 miles. Six miles is a long hike to me.
Like sloughfoot, I would rather just see the apprx. roundtrip distance listed on the cache page, especially if it’s going to be more than a half mile (TY, LB7). Not only may you not feel like doing a bit of a hike on a certain day, but you may not have time for it if you are traveling or trying to squeeze a cache or two into a busy schedule.
Then the was the time our first caching winter that we went for a cache that was only a tenth of a mile away, but we were breaking trail in snow over our boots and there was some slight elevation change. That was a looooong hike by the time we finished.

6 miles seems long to me also. I know this isn’t the forum or even the right site to make recommendations, but I think “medium” could be 5K (~3 miles). Anything over 3 miles, I’d consider to be a “long” walk / hike.
I also just checked the two “longer” caches that I have and both list the distances (wet / dry routes) so I guess that puts me on the “nice” list for Christmas.
12/21/2010 at 5:26 pm #1940638Traveling from point A to point B (Home to Cottage up north), A short hike is no more than a few tenths of a mile from the road I travel on. When I’m in an area for a purpose, the short hike moves into the distance of about a mile one way.
Maybe there’s need for a different category other than a park and grab. That’s why I’m always checking my GPS to see “distance to” a cache as I travel.

Yes, but a few of us know how good you are at judging distance. The .75 mile hike that turned into 3.5 miles comes to mind. 😀

You must have missed my quote from the prior page.
