Why? That’s all I want to know. I went out to get some pictures of the caches I’ve placed. I stopped in at my It’s A Shame cache and had to just shake my head. The container was completely exposed, the log sheet and geocache info form were tossed out on the ground, the baggies ripped up. The camo was still attached to the container and the log sheet was salvageable, so I put that back to rights.
I’m thinking they probably saw someone, maybe a couple of times, and thought they’d find something cool, but got upset when it was just a piece of paper 😆
Still bothers me though. Guess I’ll just have to keep an eye on it and hope for the best. I did revise the cache description to warn against placing anything (swag/trackables) in the cache. What’s the point if they’ll just go missing, right?

05/10/2010 at 7:56 pm #1928759I’d love for it to not bother me, but it’s the first time it’s happened to one of my caches. I’m just glad they didn’t destroy the camo. It’s fairly unique and would be difficult to replace. I accept it as a hazard, especially in that particular location. I just didn’t expect it to happen so soon after placing.
05/10/2010 at 8:06 pm #1928760Not to pile on, but the root of the problem might not even be desctructive muggles rather bad cachers who left the container exposed. We heard about a cache last weekend where the container was left out in the open on the trail after it was found. And as cache owners we have seen first hand how some have a hard time replacing the cache as they found it.
05/10/2010 at 9:12 pm #1928761I’m sure it’s muggles on this one. The nature of the container/camo make it so easy to re-hide a cave man could do it.

“I can’t figure out how to put back this cache container.”
05/11/2010 at 3:11 pm #1928763The first time’s the toughest to deal with, but after a while you’ll be used to it. It’s part of the caching game unfortunately. The more hides you have, the more time you’ll spend doing maintenance.
I have a cache in Racine that needs replacing again. I can’t remember how many times it’s been now. It’s an annoyance because its’ at the end of a breakwater, and far from home. Thankfully my son and I love the location. But ammo can, after ammo can keeps disappearing, along with all the swag and logbooks. In 4 years, I’ve never once been able to read any of the logs left in this cache. I did have the opportunity this spring when I checked on the cache to see if it survived the winter, but it was so cold, I didn’t take the time to read it. 😕
But, I’ll be going back again this week, with another ammo can, more GOOD swag, and another log book. Small price to pay to keep this one active.
I can’t complain, but sometimes I still do…
Thanks Joe! -
