Did you ever wonder about the geohandles we see?
I was just reading a post by Miata and it struck me that he may eventually replace his pet with a sports car of a different brand. Will he then change his geohandle to Corvette or Mercedes or whatever?
Several months ago we received an email inquiring if the beast was two-legged or four-legged. We responded with the declaration that he had five thumbs on each hand and does all our typing. We haven’t bothered to count his legs, but as near as we can tell, he and the chair he is sitting in have approximately six.
Some of our cachers have geohandles that indicate a serial assignment or missing members. These leave the nagging question of the others. Who is Natloh1; why haven’t I seen any posts by wzbt01 or wzbt02? Pyro43 brings thoughts I don’t care to entertain. MR Anderson where is MRS Anderson? olahot, olacold? Ottahand, inthehand? Hotdogs off Trail: Hamburgers off Trail or Hotdogs on the Trail? Cachew, what about the pecans or filberts?
Or, a geohandle may indicate something about age or experience: will Linda Fawn ever become Linda Doe? Will Ranger Boy ever become Ranger Man? Will LtMan ever become CaptMan? Did knotmaster start as a knotapprentice?
These names can also create misconceptions PharmTeam needs to reconsider their name, they are not a minor league team. Toolgirl, lives in Madison, you might think her last name would be Dorn; wrong. Socko a dead Italian immigrant? No, an active, living Irish-American. packfanattic could be any resident of Brown County.
A geohandle may say something about geography or bring questions as the other handles do. What is a badlatitude? I suppose any latitude greater than 60° might get a little cold at night. But, does that make it bad? Northgal or upnorthdoc brings questions of southgal or downsouthdoc. That only covers two compass points. Cheesehead Dave makes me wonder if there is a Flatlander Fred.
Was it social or economic issues that determined the geoname Team cachebarr?
Some names are just nice, CanyonRose or chicpbut. The latter brings LimaBeanButt to mind so Think I need to drop this issue.
Now what does one do with a badly abused spellchecker?
Nadaclue!

06/22/2003 at 4:09 pm #1749089Here is the story behind our name, The Troops. When I was first introduced to Geocaching.com, I typed in our zip code. The first cache that came up was Plank Road Waypoint. The cache was on the way to Brookfield Square. When I dropped off my wife at the mall she asked me if I was going to take “The Troops”(our six kids)to go find the cache. So the name stuck. Four of the children are teenage plus age and have strayed from the fun of geocaching and the five and eight year old only go when it is a easy one. When I go on a geocache-a-thon, I’m an army of one. I never served in the military either. That’s how we got the name.

06/22/2003 at 7:53 pm #1749091My handle was not my first choice.
kbraband was already taken.06/22/2003 at 8:41 pm #1749092Well I would guess that most of us created our names back when we really hadn’t even cached yet, so we didn’t really know how much it was going to become part of who we are. I created mine back when I was a captain of an ambulance service but I’m not a captain anymore. I even thought of changing it once but wondered if anyone would recognize me.
06/22/2003 at 11:06 pm #1749093no one will ever accuse us of being creative

06/23/2003 at 12:27 am #1749094Well, one may say that I do like to be social, but that wasn’t what prompted the geoname. After receiving my GPS for Christmas and not really knowing the sport very well at all and finding our first geocache the very next day, we hadn’t even thought of a name until I was logging the find. Well, being that I wanted us to be recognized as a family team geocaching together, we wanted to put our last name in the geoname. I guess I didn’t realize the problem when I married Mr. Barr. So there you have it.
First, I thought of BarrCache, but didn’t want people to think I was out stealing money or geocache stuffings for some bar cash. So I figured well, I’ll see if I can get enough dollars out of geocaches for the cash bar! [ ]

06/23/2003 at 1:22 am #1749095WZBT01 and WZBT02 were already taken by mountain sherpas. When asked about geocaching, number 01 said I like it, number two said “Me Too” of course my answer was me Three. Hence WZBT03!!
06/23/2003 at 2:12 am #1749096Just had to put my two cents in on this conversation: There was a television commercial for a credit card company several years ago featuring a husband walking around his house stating how far he was from Los Angles, how fast he was walking, what his elevation was, etc… all while his wife was watching him, shaking her head. The premise was that the wife had bought a GPSr for her husband, and now he was driving her crazy with it. At the end of the commercial the wife mutters “Should’ve bought him the tie”. My wife bought me my GPSr for Christmas one year, and let’s say that the commercial hits really close to home.
Now you know.06/23/2003 at 1:06 pm #1749097Team Socko, Vincetti, and Mel got thier name from Adam (Vincetti). He had just learned of our namesakes (the first two names)in a history class and thought it would be a cool name. (The original holders of these names were put to death for a murder it was later learned they did not commit!) Our spelling of the first two names is not original, (I changed it slightly to try and avoid offending anyone). Mel was added for Mary’s name by combining her three initials.
06/23/2003 at 3:14 pm #1749098The Cheeseheads are all… well… a bunch of Cheeseheads! (Although aren’t we all?)
For my first find, I was the completely unoriginal krugdm. After peeking through the forums, I decided I needed something a little more colorful that has a couple connotations: From Wisconsin, Packer Fan.
Even though about 75% of my finds are solo, I came up with Team Cheesehead (now just The Cheeseheads) to use for when it’s more than just me or for events.
06/24/2003 at 5:30 pm #1749099The following page explaines it all. And it’s much easier than re-typing it all here:
http://users.elknet.net/kevong/OuttaHandWebPage.html06/25/2003 at 1:47 am #1749100I don’t know that I really intended for this thread to be a “justify your name” forum. But, I have rally been entertained by the responses that have been provided. I guess it is only fair to explain where our geohandle came from. To start, we discovered our logo.. a little girl with her cat. Trudy is a diminutive form of Helen’s middle name which she prefers we do not disclose. The original logo was a bit crude, didn’t look a lot like a cat. So we mulled it over, hashed it out, talked it through. We refined the drawing, enhanced it, and fixed it. We were all set to adopt it as our logo and we took it to our grand children for their opinions. They happened to watching some Disney film at the time. I’m not sure which child it was, but one pointed at the logo and said “it’s a little girl and her cat.” And that’s the story of our geoname Little girl and her cat.
06/26/2003 at 2:57 am #1749101Our handle came way back when while expecting our first born. I cross stitched a bib with Priebe’s Pride (as in pride and joy) When we started geocaching, I remembered the bib, and also recognized the tie to a family group of lions. (a pride)
Hence the Priebe family geocaching group got their name.
