I think I have to find like 200 caches or something before I become Ranger Man.
The nickname came from a lifeguard I used to work and go out with. She called me Ranger Boy. I found my first cache in a park I was on patrol in, so I used the name for geocaching.

04/30/2004 at 11:00 pm #1749104After thouroughly enjoying this topic, and feeling slightly honored to make the original posting, we wanted to add our ‘name story’.
About 9 years ago, we were headed off to Easter church service in a rush and with about 2 minutes to spare and the almost four year old chimed in with “Here we are again. Off like a herd of turtles!” Obviously, this was a phrase we had used before but it was very comical in that particular setting. Karen carrying Bryce in his carseat, Carly in her cute little dress and Easter bonnet, and Tony in his Sunday best.
We always remembered that and it is kind of a refrain in our life. We are always on time but just barely. (OK, not always.) And so, our geocaching team is “Off Like A Herd Of Turtles” (OLAHOT).
If you are at the Geo-campout, check out our camping sign. You’ll know who we are even if our geoname isn’t on the sign.
Oh, is it politically correct to call people by their geoname? For example, it seems odd to call the Beast ‘Ray’ and I didn’t even realize that Trudy was really ‘Helen.’ Although I have an easier time with calling KBraband ‘Ken.’ Now why is that
05/01/2004 at 1:23 am #1749105Mine’s simple…the school district that I work for is in my name. I use geocaching in my social studies classes and take my students to the nature pod next to our school to teach them about the basics of geocaching. Next year, I’d like to work geocaching into my math classes. I’m also attempting to get some GPS systems for our school.
05/01/2004 at 3:09 am #1749106I guess mine’s not too tough to figure out…although my hound is getting a little old to find much interest in geocaching.

05/01/2004 at 3:15 am #1749107Ours goes back about 8 years. Some very good friends invited us to go to a softball tournament that is held for charity every July in DePere, WI. The tournament is called the “Pink Flamingo Classic”. Ever since that first year we have been going back, enjoying the food, the beer and being with good friends (oh ya, we do watch some softball too in between BEER runs ). In looking forward to each Pink Flamingo weekend we have started to collect a cache of flamingo’s and things with flamingo’s on it. So, in looking for a name that would fit our family of 4 all I had to do was look around the house and see the different flamingo’s around and the name Flamingo 4 was born or should I say “HATCHED”.
05/02/2004 at 2:48 am #1749108This has been an exciting thread for us to watch develop. We too have found ourselves wondering about the nature of many our fellow geocachers’ names. Oftentimes when we encounter someone else and introduce ourselves, that is soon followed by the question of why that name.
“What’s Next?” works for us on so many levels! We found our first two caches without a name. We thought about Railbirds, an allusion to Packer fans who hang along the fence watching practice, but it didn’t seem to capture enough personality. We also thought Sam and Ella would be fun just because it sounded funny, but we ultimately “chickened” out.
“What’s Next?” is a quote from President Josiah Bartlet. We’re big fans of the West Wing. Tim’s a bleeding heart liberal Democrat. Carole just likes Martin Sheen (among others) (HA! HA!). When Bartlet is done with something and ready to move on, he will say, “What’s Next?” We thought that also fit with finding the next cache.
Since then we’ve also come to realize we’re huge “gear geeks,” and “What’s Next?” might actually ask what new accessory or equipment is now required for our continued existence.
There you have it. We’re “What’s Next?”
05/02/2004 at 3:55 am #1749109Wow, this thread started before I knew what Geocaching was. Thanks for bringing it back. I too often sit and ponder as to the meaning behind many geocaching handles.
Last summer my younger sister introduced me to geocaching. She is a true animal nut, who at the time was working in an animal shelter. She even has a web site that revolves around her cat(s).
My sence of humor tends to be on the dry and sarcastic side, thus I thought it appropriate that I be the “Cathunter”.
My second choice was “Savage Mortician”, but it didn’t seem to go over as well.

05/02/2004 at 10:01 pm #1749110“GREEN BAY PADDLERS”
Quite simple actually. Amy and I love canoeing. We’ve done the Boundary Waters as a couple the last few years (we’re taking “What’s Next?” with us this year) and we love the outdoors! I’ve canoed almost 200 miles of the Wisconsin River and we’ve paddled a few other rivers in Wisconsin as well.
When Amy went to the Green Bay “Geo-Breakfast” last year she was asked if we were a member of the “Green Bay Paddlers” canoe club. We didn’t even know it existed!
Amy is the die-hard cacher in our marriage. I really enjoy it a lot but get distracted by other hobbies like fishing and canoeing(and eating!).
We love this hobby and made some great friends in the form of “What’s Next?”. We’re shocked by all the incredible places in Wisconsin (especially within 20 minutes of Green Bay) that we probably would have never found had it not been for this hobby!
See you all at the campout! (With our canoe!!!)

05/03/2004 at 1:48 am #1749111arcangl7 is simply another of several 8 digit usernames (that resembles something about me) that I use online… arc – I am a quite involved with our local American Red Cross chapter. angl – I am a quasi-machinist for my full time work
The Team GeoPink part is a bit tougher to explain. You’ll have to ask my wife and four daughters to explain that!

LOL! In my mind I’ve been pronouncing it “arch angel”, picturing you with wings and a halo.
05/03/2004 at 8:34 pm #1749113Not a problem, Ken. That was kind of the other half of / reason for that username… Either way I still prefer Jeff or GeoPink.
It’s not often I’m pictured with a halo over my head either. Thanks!

Co-conspirators to make the world a better place…11/22/2004 at 11:03 pm #1749114Somebody asked me about this thread over the weekend. Here it is.
11/23/2004 at 2:43 am #1749115I don’t see myself changing mine in the near future. There have been quite a few people at caching events that ask me what a Miata is??
11/23/2004 at 12:53 pm #1749116This is a fun thread! I’m wondering how I missed it the first time around!
Our team name stems from the fact that every year we go on a fishing trip to northern Minnesota. (Oh, do I LOVE that place!! I have a photo of it on my gc.com profile page.) We started geocaching very soon after we came back from that trip, so fishing was still fresh on our minds. We were going to use “fishcatchers”, but decided to play on the words a bit, so came up with “fishcachers”.
