Is there a way, other than creating a caches along a route query, to search for caches only in a particular direction/range of bearings from an associated point?

Not that I know of. However, you can do a large PQ of stuff ya want, and stuff you dont want, and use the tools in GSAK to get the list down to the area you want. Useful tools for this include latitude/longitude, and the distance from a given point along an arc.
