I’m confused, why are people voting in the COTM for “Devils Lake West Bluff”, which is a disabled cache??? It appears that this cache disappeared around July 28th, when a/the tree tipped over taking the cache away with it.

I’ll tell you why I voted for it. 1) It hasn’t been archived . 2) Read my log from our attempt to place a temperary cache in it’s place – This is one of my most memorable cache attempts. I hope it does get back up and running.

Is there some rule against voting for it? Just because it has temperary problems doesn”t mean it’s not a great cache.

No offense intended … I don’t think it’s “against the rules” (at least none that I see), just “confusing” to me. I guess I would assume that one would vote for a cache with the thinking that others should be encourage to try that cache … but there’s no cache to be found at this time and hasn’t been for over 2 months.

That said, I think it’s great that you set out with the goal of fixing it, since the owner doesn’t seem to be getting around to it … it’s cool when cachers like you try to help out.

As I understand the owner has some foot problems and can’t get out to check on it. Hence the trying to replace…so it probably won’t be back up anytime soon.

I guess it depends on how you define “OF THE MONTH”. I personally would define it as either the current month or the previous month. Since this cache has been disabled for more than 2 months, I suppose some people must define “OF THE MONTH” as “sometime in the past”. That said, I don’t think it is necessarily against the rules, just kind of odd.

I think the main purpose of COTM is to draw attention to worthy caches for others to seek. It is basically a glorified recommendation system. Nominating (or voting for) disabled or archived caches would seem to be counter to this purpose.

I’ve always seen COTM as simply this…

A way to honor, on a regular basis, quality Wisconsin geocaches.

Past, present, future, this month, last month, two years ago… doesn’t matter.

Do you feel a nominated cache was/is a quality cache deserving this honor. If yes, Vote for it. If not, nominate one that is.

COTM is really no more, no less.

You, the WGA member, are also free to place whatever personal restirictions on your voting methodology as your heart desires. Though I wouldn’t expect that everyone will do the same. It’s like geocaching itself… everyone plays the game their own way.

Thanks for all the comments. Again, please don’t feel that I was crying foul … it just hit me as being interesting/confusing/etc. Also I hope the owner’s foot heals soon and I understand the need to let the cache sit idle in the mean time.
