    Hi Bill,

LOL. You are right, I have been active in this forum. My feeling is that all members deserve to be heard, and have their questions answered on this topic, since it is a significant change from past practice.

I thought maybe you were using the forum as an alternate to temporary logs to run your posting numbers up.

I think if you look at Zuma’s numbers (caches found and placed) you will see he really doesn’t have to run his numbers up. 😉

I hope everyone knows that I only intended tis a s joke. When all of this controversy started I traded a few E-mails with Ralph. At that time I was upset with the way things were going since I have logged quite a few temps. I haven’t totally changed sides, but I’m really looking forward to meeting new people at the campout and exghanging ideas. I really hope that by the end of May we can all be working together to make the WGA something that we can be proud to say we belong to and quiet the comments both within the state and from outside. I do agree that most of the temporary logging takes place in SE Wisconsin, but I’m also starting to see signs of this starting to change.

Well, I had plans to attend the event with some of my caching posse based on the fact that the temporary caches would still be logable for this springs event. Now that they are not logable, I will probably talk to my posse about staying more “local” to do a cache run.

Just like politics, I will let my $$ and lack of attendance speak for itself.

When we got started in geocaching, it was about the fun of the hunt, getting outdoors with the family, and the camaraderie of caching with and meeting friends.

The numbers are nice too and it’s fun to see them go up. Which is one reason we like (liked?) logging temps. But stats are meaningless, there are no prizes, and I won’t be chiseling my find count into my tombstone.

In other words, we don’t base our decision on when, where, or with whom to geocache on the number of smilelys we get.

Maybe there’s a point after 000s of caches that it becomes about that, I don’t know. But if it ever does for our family “team,” we vow to quit geocaching because it will have lost all real meaning.

I have to admit that to myself it is not at all about the number of finds & ect. It truly for me is the wondrous views of getting to the cache area. Also expanding out on a different route to familiar places not really having a reason to get out of routine directions until I started to geocache. I make a list of caches that I would like to try & if I have 50 on it & only find 1 then great………..if I find more then ok also.
Like this past weekend I was out state for a get together with friends. I had a list of caches to look for if I wanted to look for but the view from the condo deck overlooking the Mississippi River & time with friends to me was more important then racking up numbers. This just means that come fall when the colors are changing it will give me another excuse to revisit that area & then go caching.

I love Milestones. But for myself, not as a contest with anyone else. (except my sister of course……gotta log more than her!

Do I wish I could log all the temps? Sure do! Do I wish I could log all 6 stages of that 5 star multi that took 3 trips? Sure Do! Am I gonna follow the “rules” that groundspeak.com and the WGA have approved? Sure will! Do I care if anyone else does? Sure don’t!

I know people want to play the game “by their rules” but I don’t think baseball would be any fun if the Home team decided to log extra runs on the score board (Unless it was my Red Sox and the Yankees were in town…)

What fun is keeping score if we all play by different rules?

I approve of this decision as I think the sport has become more about numbers than going out to see new and unique places.

We have been to the campout at Chippewa Falls and Door County and did not log a temp cache at either one but that is because we decided we would not log temps.

I do enjoy going to the campouts but when they end up west of Madison they end up being a bit too far to drive to.

Us members up north are in the minority because the majority of the members are from the southeast part of the state and that is why the WGA sponsored events are where they are at.

    Hey Paul,

Thanks for sharing your views. I agree that the choice of Governor Dodge makes for a bit of a drive for us folks up north, but at least it is also a drive for those in SE Wisconsin. 🙂 I am sure with rising gas prices, and the more distant location, many people will need to factor the distance in.

I have only visited the park once before, and know it to be a beautiful place, so I personally think it is worth the drive, and am really looking forward to the revisit.

I also agree that it is too bad that sometimes the sport of geocaching becomes more about accumulating numbers, than seeing great places. I try to remind myself often that there is no extra soft cloud in heaven for the guy with the most finds. And as far as I know, Garmin is not yet offering big money contracts to endorse their products for people with big numbers.

Geocaching is not a contest, and there really is no big benefit of giving yourself 50 extra smileys, at least no benefit that I can see.

Sure it is…Who can Drive the Furthest to have fun at the Event???
    .
    .
    .
Now, I know it ain’t going to be me or RRGoinPostal…(the distance thing)…but we are still going to have fun. Grabbing a couple caches and have a couple drinks…(Personally…having a few more beers then the number of caches we will nab will be great this year) and sitting around the fire and BS-ing with a couple friends…the time of fun will be had!!!

    Hi ArcherDragoon,

Hey, that is a good idea–we should have a contest to see who comes the furthest….

And we do plan on having the big fire again, both Friday and Saturday nights, with ample fermented beverages and geochat to share. I am real glad that you and RRGoinPostal are going to make it. Should be great!!!

The main difference here is it’s not a contest with other cachers, INABTN notwithstanding. It’s not a score, just stats of the number of pieces of tupperware you found using a billion-dollar satellite network. No prizes, no rewards, and so far no one has found a way to turn this into a profession. [Geocaching as a spectator sport…well that would be about as entertaining as watching Scrabble. “He’s in the tree…no, he’s in the shrub…now he’s looking under a rock…Oh no! He fell in the creek!]

Your stats are for your own bemusement. And we kinda liked keeping track of the 20 different, challenging, and in some cases miles-apart hides at the Navarino event that we took two days to find.

But…that gets us back to square one with this whole logging/not-logging thing, and the decision has already been made when it comes to WGA events. This will undoubtedly impact all other events as well.

    Hi Uncle_Fun,

I am sorry that you will be unable to attend, and your great sense of humor will be missed. I had looked forward to seeing you, and the entire posse again, running the trails….I do understand your perspective though, and respect your decision.

    Hi Blue Cougar,

Great way of looking at it. I too cache for the experience of the place and finding new places.

In all honesty, I have to confess that I have to fight the urge for more smileys as much as any of the other “numbers” people. Once bitten by the “need more smileys” bug it is hard to resist numbers just for the sake of numbers. I try to remind myself why I am caching, and sometimes I remember to go for the long fun ones, and other times I end up just going for the numbers. Fortunately, I enjoy both types of caching, the numbers kind, and the adventure kind.

    Great points. Love the analogy.

Oh, I don’t know, have you ever watched someone search for a cache you knew where it was and they had no clue
