Can’t you accomplish this by way of a challenge cache? Or a “Crazy DNFer”-type cache?
Might be a cool the other icon challenge, x finds, x dnfs, x maintenace performed, x temp disabled, x notes, x will attends etc.

10/20/2010 at 4:51 am #1937658I have 72 DNFs and 903 Finds.
All opinions, comments, and useless drivel I post are mine alone and do not reflect the opinions of the WGA BOD.
10/20/2010 at 11:19 am #1937659193 dnfs.
10/20/2010 at 11:19 am #1937660784 DNFs.
I generally log all of my DNFs. The biggest exception would be caches I walked away from without giving a serious search, often because it was a location or style of hide that I didnt enjoy being at. The game is supposed to be for fun, so when I run across a particularly poor hide that is not fun I might look for a few seconds, and if I dont see it, just walk away. I think of those as “walk aways” without a serious look, not DNFs, so logging it as a DNF may or may not occur.
WhatI would like to log is “Location not suitable for an enjoyable cache, so left without looking,” but I know cache owners would not care for that. Plus I understand that not all caches are for everybody, and the next person might think that a film can in a rock pile is great fun, or “wow, wasnt that clever to stick a nano on an electrical box.” It is better to just walk away from the ones you dont like, rather worry to much about them.

10/20/2010 at 1:15 pm #1937661I generally DNF my finds unless they happen during a big cache run which has only started since last year. I don’t log them due to my poor record keeping- it’s all I can do to keep up with the 🙂 .
So far, my logged DNFs are 202 which is ~8.5%, so with those I may have missed, I think I’d fall in the 10% DNF to Find ratio.
Following the signals from space.
10/20/2010 at 1:18 pm #1937662I have 396 DNFs. DNF challenges are explicitly prohibited by the challenge cache guideline. LINKY
I forgot to add that I really appreciate everyone’s DNF postings when I get notice of caches needing to be archived. If people don’t post their DNFs, it is not reasonable to expect the owner to know the cache is missing. I get a lot of “This cache hasn’t been found in 3 months. It must be missing.” on 3 star difficulty caches with 2 DNFs by one finder. It will surprise no one that we would not take action in a case like this. Maybe there were really 20 DNFs during that 3 month period, but if they aren’t logged, they don’t count.
10/20/2010 at 1:27 pm #1937663We have 386 DNFs, often on the same cache. I’m with Ralph, if it’s the type of place or hide or whatever that doesn’t interest us, we might look briefly and walk away. The DNFs mean we looked like we wanted to find it. We’ve gotten much better at gracefully saying…..”We’ll never find them all, let’s move on and have fun.” As a general rule though, if we took the time to stop, we’ll take the time to look and log our miss if that’s the result.
Trekkin’ has a tendency to stick with certain ones I don’t think are fun. The locals know what those are. Heck, the COs know what they are! He’s on his own for those.
BTW, we have noted our DNF count right on our gc profile page.
10/20/2010 at 1:29 pm #1937664I’m another that don’t log “Walk away without a serious search”.
And if I’m team caching, sometimes I let my teammate log the DNF as he would speak for both of us.
But otherwise, I do try and log my DNF’s when possible.
10/20/2010 at 3:52 pm #1937665Where/how do you check your DNF number??
10/20/2010 at 4:02 pm #1937666279 logged dnf’s. Went back and found about half of them.

on your GC.com profile, my logs, Didn’t find it.
total number of logs of this type is on the upper left of the screenDisclaimer : Always answering to a higher power.
10/20/2010 at 6:13 pm #1937668I have 7 dnf’s for 131 finds and I log a DNF even if I didn’t spend a super long time looking for it. I DNF caches because I didn’t find them, and so that I have a reference for next time. Plus as a cache owner it would be nice to see DNF to make me feel like maybe I did have a good hide 😆
I’m just personally troubled by someone posting a find even if they looked previously and DNF’d it but didn’t log that. (Guess that’s why we all have an opinion)I have also noticed that some people sign logs but they don’t log them online, why wouldn’t you??
10/20/2010 at 6:19 pm #1937669Not to hijack the thread, but on this same note, do you rate how well you hid your cache based on people DNF’ing? I know for some it has to be, and for others its satisfying seeing their cache found. Just curious on everyone’s thoughts.

I know several cachers who have hundreds of finds and never log them. One has over 500 finds. It’s everyone’s personnal choice on how they want to participate.

I have a cache in the Viroqua cemetery that has about the same ammount of dnf’s as finds. I think this is probably my best hide, not because of dnf’s but because of the comments I get on the cache after people go back and make the find, sometimes after an extra hint from me, sometimes it just jumps out at them the 2nd or 3rd time they visit.
I rate my hides on the comments I get, the more time people spend on there log, the better I feel about my hide in general. When someone logs a dnf on one of my caches I usually send them a message asking if they would like an additional hint, because I want people to find my caches, thats why I put them out there.
