As cache owners (over 200 active cache hides) we appreciate it anytime cachers log a DNF. It gives us a heads up that the cache may be muggled. With that being said. We log our no finds with the exception that if someone had found it the next day (or after us), then we know its there and we just missed it. Tami
04/17/2007 at 4:12 am #1873144I also agree with Seth’s Comments. If I am looking for a respectable amount of time, I will log a DNF. If I am out on my lunch break or something for a few minutes, I will not at that time, because I know I didn’t give it my all… If I do give my all, and don’t find it, Yes, I will log as a DNF.

04/17/2007 at 10:09 am #1873145I Log them, but I don’t use my real name 😆
04/17/2007 at 12:22 pm #1873146If I get out of the car, I’ll almost always log a DNF, although I’ve also logged DNFs where I haven’t left the car, because I wasn’t able to find the pocket park buried in the subdivision.
DNFs help the cache owner, because the feedback can alert them to problems with their cache, especially if they see several in a row.
DNFs help other cachers, because if they see that the last few logs were DNFs, it might be a sign that the cache is missing and that it’s not worth wasting too much time hunting that particular cache. I’ve looked for (and not found) caches where people have written in their logs that they didn’t find the cache, but they posted the log as a find because they were at GZ and “certainly would have found it if it were there.” Unfortunately, I didn’t read the past logs; I only saw the smiley, so I assumed the previous cacher found the cache.
DNFs help me, because GSAK can keep track of my DNFed caches for me to help me prioritize what caches to look for on a given day.
04/17/2007 at 4:45 pm #1873147I always log my DNF’s. I only wish DNF’s were tracked right beside my finds too.
04/17/2007 at 7:51 pm #1873148I just have to observe that 46 out of 47 folks here report logging their DNFs.
I dont want to say that is high, but I have to say that I have tried a bunch of tough FTF chances, and noticed quite a bit of evidence of folks looking. And then when I go to log the find (or DNF, as the case may be), I notice no one has logged anything, yet there are several people who have put the cache on their watchlist.
Do you suppose that it is aliens doing that? 😉

Nah…those search attempts are me every time (and one or more of the 4 out of 5 attempts I didn’t log).
04/17/2007 at 9:54 pm #1873150I notice the same thing, Zuma. There are probably 2000 regular (once a month) geocachers in Wisconsin. Only 45 voted in the poll. That leaves 1950 who may never log their DNFs.
On the other hand, it’s pretty easy to see who logs DNFs by looking at the recent logs. Looking at the last 200 DNF logs, I found 145 different people posting DNF (basically since last Friday). For fun, here is the list, which looks kind of like a who’s who of the WGA. I’m sure there are more DNF posters who just weren’t out last weekend.

zuma!04/18/2007 at 1:21 am #1873151😉 You can add our name to that long list. We’ve been out of state for 10 days recently and have just started logging our find/no finds now. Tami
On a side comment. I just want to say how much I appreciate cache owners maintaining their caches in a timely manner in Wisconsin. 😆
04/18/2007 at 4:23 pm #1873152😀 You can add my name to the list also. While we found all the caches we looked for last weekend, I did post a DNF for GCQZQA on 4/6/07 and GCR8FM on 3/24. The latter cache was confirmed muggled out and has been replaced by the owner. 🙄
04/19/2007 at 1:29 pm #1873153You can add our name as well. I didn’t cached over the w/e but logged a DNF yesterday.
Remember that a lot of cachers in our area have a fairly long distance to travel for caches once we’ve gotten the ones within a radius.
04/19/2007 at 3:16 pm #1873154I log them if I have put for a real good effort and just can’t find it. Otherwise I just chalk it up to bad eyesight.
04/19/2007 at 4:16 pm #1873155I log them because it can be used as a tool for the cache owner. If no one was to put up a DNF..the owner might not get the idea that there just might be an issue with the cache i.e. coords off, missing, moved. I feel, as a cache owner they are a great way to help me maintain my caches.
04/19/2007 at 10:12 pm #1873156We can vouch for Mathman. He truly does log his DNF’s!!!
We will log them if we have given it much of an effort. If we pull up and it looks like a long hike or we don’t think we have the time, we will not log it as a DNF. Night caches sometimes don’t get DNF’s either specially if we get scared to death by something and decide to make a run back to the car! 😀
