Do we know on the status of the permission letter and rules. I just got permission to place a few caches in Wildcat Moutain State Park and the manager stated about a upcomming permission letter and rules on placing and for how long? I was just hoping to clarify this before placing the caches.

By the way. Thanks for the Hard work the board has done, and will be doing for us to use these lands.!!

The DNR policy isn’t official yet, but it’s a good idea to ask for permission on state land.

Since you already obtained permission, it will be a breeze to fulfill the written requirement. Once the DNR’s permission form is complete, we plan on posting it on our website. You should be able to print it out and mail it to the person who granted you permission.

It will probably be a few months yet, at best, before the DNR policy would be in effect.

    Hi,

I’m a new WGA member, and I was wondering if the DNR policy is official yet or not. The most recent post I could find about the policy was from last June. I have a place in mind for hiding a cache on DNR lands, and want to be sure I do it right. Thanks.

    Lisa,
At this point, your best course of action is to contact the rangers at the property you would like to use. If there is no DNR/ranger office at this property, Try the next closest State park or forest. If there is no one there to help you check back here and we will see if we can’t put you in touch with the proper people. Some cachers are a bit apprehensive, but soon find what great people the DNR folks are to work with.

You can also go to the DNR website and look up the closest Service center and they will get the property info for you. That is how I got in touch with my ranger. After talking to the ranger, he was allready well aware of Geocaching and and was more then happy to give permission for our series of caches in Wildcat State Park. Only stipulation he had, was to email him all of our cache location and starting contents. Wanted no food ect ect…. But mine was very helpful and excited about bringing caches to their park.

In fact. we have been forwarding all the great remark emails we is so excited for bringing a new activity to his park.

    hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies. I’ll try the DNR website for contact info, since the area I have in mind is a wildlife area, not a park or forest.

There are always some rules to follow, so it doesn’t hurt to ASK!!! If you get a “NO”, oh well… you asked!

I found an exception to a rule for the listing of the Wisconsin “Natural” areas. I had the exception actually COME TO ME!! The Woodland Dunes Nature Center is on that list, but it is privately owned by the Nature Center & its members, not the DNR and receives NO money except by private donations. The Exec. Dir. found me via a co-worker of mine and ASKED me if I would like to place caches along the 6 miles of trails.

There is no cost to visit and walk the natural area…strictly voluntary donations. I joined as a member as a way to say “THANKS” for letting myself and fellow geocachers utilize the area for our sport. I currently have 3 regular and one multi out, but they are not listed yet, as I am getting them all ready for submission..soon!! I will be using them for a Geocaching exhibit/Demo during OwlFest this coming weekend! Them I’m letting them LOOSE!! LOL

Unfortunately, I haven’t had such good luck with a guy I’ve been talking with. He is using a letter dated 2002 and said that’s the latest policy and it says there is a $25 fee to hide a cache, plus other guidelines. I will be very happy to see the new guidelines and forms come out and maybe some new areas will open up to us.

Geez.. a $25 fee!! A cacher could go broke doing something like that, if that were true. I voluntarily took the $35 a yr membership, but then again, it’s local to me and why not…..it goes towards the Dunes.

Can’t wait to get the information also. Put many minds at ease then!

Interesting- Ken or Brian, isn’t there at least a name and number in the DNR chain-of-command where we could direct unknowing DNR staff members to seek info?

That would be great. I’d love to take some more recent info over to this guy.
